Warner Bros. recently announced theatrical release dates for three of its 2023 slate of films, including Mad Max: Fury Road's prequel, Mad Max: Furiosa.

Furiosa will premiere theatrically on June 23, 2023, according to Variety. Warner Bros. has no plans to release its 2023 films simultaneously on streaming and in theatres, which supports the studio's prior statement that its unusual 2021 release plan isn't continuing.

George Miller, the creator behind the Mad Max franchise of films, will return to direct, co-write and produce Furiosa. Longtime producing partner and Oscar-nominated Doug Mitchell will also be attached to this project as well. Fury Road's production designer Colin Gibson and cinematographer John Seale will also be joining Miller and Mitchell.

2015's Mad Max: Fury Road followed Tom Hardy's Max Rockatansky as he traveled through a post-apocalyptic desert wasteland, where he encountered Charlize Theron's Furiosa and her gang of cult escapees. They worked together to travel across the dangerous terrain, which featured epic battles and visual effects.

Furiosa will serve as a prequel to Furiosa's character from Fury Road and is set to focus on events prior to the 2015 film.

Theron will not be returning to reprise her role, however, due to the differences between the actor's age and the character's. Miller previously spoke about the hard decision to not re-cast Theron, saying, "For the longest time, I thought we could just use CG de-aging on Charlize, but I don’t think we’re nearly there yet. Despite the valiant attempts on The Irishman, I think there’s still an uncanny valley. Everyone is on the verge of solving it, particularly Japanese video-game designers, but there’s still a pretty wide valley."

Miller cast Anya Taylor-Joy (The New Mutants, The Witch) to play the title role of Furiosa, alongside Thor's Chris Hemsworth and Watchmen's Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. While there's no further confirmed information about the joining stars' roles, a previously leaked call did give some details into Hemsworth's character. The call described his character as a man named Dementus who's in his 30s-40s and "breathtakingly handsome" with "an angel's face, scarred by a deep forehead wounded stitched together with shiny chrome staples."

Helmed by George Miller, Mad Max: Furiosa stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. The film is currently set to debut on June 23, 2023.
