Even with Hollywood productions at a standstill due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, MAD Magazine's live-action Spy vs. Spy film is moving forward, potentially with a new director attached.

Collider reported that director Rawson Marshall Thurber is currently in talks to direct the much-delayed film. The feature adaptation will be a co-production between Ron Howard and Brian Glazer's Imagine Entertainment and Warner Bros, with Howard and Glazer serving as producers. The duo has been attached to the film since it was first announced in 2011.

At the time, the producing duo had recruited screenwriter/director David Koepp to produce the film as well as oversee a screenplay by Premium Rush co-writer John Kamps. Howard was set to direct the comedy. It is unknown if Koepp and Kamps are still attached to the film.

The project was described as "a physical and highly visual action-comedy," which fits in Thurber's wheelhouse. He had previously directed similar comedies such as the Vince Vaughn-led DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story and Kevin Hart-Dwayne Johnson vehicle Central Intelligence. However, Spy vs Spy may have to wait, as the director is set to begin filming again on the action-comedy Red Notice when the pandemic subsides and production resumes.

The long-running MAD comic strip follows the Black Spy and White Spy as they constantly pursue each other in comical fashion in their trademark wide-brimmed hats and overcoats. Over the years, the duo has appeared most notably on the sketch comedy show MADtv as well as on an animated series and in video games.

No casting announcements have yet been made and no production start or release date have been announced.
