M. Night Shyamalan's next thriller has received an official title, along with a new theatrical release date.
Universal, which is distributing the film, has announced the previously untitled movie is now called Knock at the Cabin and will reach theaters on Feb. 3, 2023, up two weeks from its original slot. Shyamalan and the studio confirmed the news by tweeting an eerie teaser revealing the release date, accompanied by the sound of someone (or something) knocking.
As is customary for the filmmaker, Shyamalan is directing Knock at the Cabin from his own script. He seemingly teased his progress on the screenplay in August, tweeting a photo of an unmarked binder containing a script with the caption, "The next one. On third draft. Super tight. Under a 100 pages."
With details under lock and key, for now, it seems that Knock at the Cabin is another one of Shymalan's original creations. The filmmaker has rarely adapted previously published material in the past, with the exceptions of The Last Airbender -- Shyamalan's infamous live-action take on the Avatar: The Last Airbender animated series -- and his most recent film Old, which is loosely based on Pierre Oscar Levy and Frederik Peeters' 2013 graphic novel Sandcastle. Shyamalan also executive produced and helmed the pilot for Wayward Pines, a TV show based on Blake Crouch's sci-fi mystery book series of the same name.
Despite being adapted from a comic book, Old has many of what are now well-recognized trademarks of Shyamalan's storytelling, including a twist ending and an extended cameo by the filmmaker himself. And while the film received mixed reviews upon its release in July, that didn't stop Old from becoming yet another box office success for its director, grossing $90.1 million against an $18 million budget. In fact, all of Shymalan's movies have earned a healthy profit since he stepped away from the world of tentpoles in the early 2010s and began focusing exclusively on making low-budget thrillers with Universal (see also: The Visit, Split, Glass).
Knock at the Cabin is currently the only film scheduled for a theatrical release on Feb. 3, 2023. Marvel Studios' Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will hit theaters two weeks later on the movie's original spot on Feb. 17.
