WARNING: The following article contains major spoilers for Season 1 of Apple TV's Servant.

M. Night Shyamalan's Servant proved to be an enticing cat-and-mouse game all season long as fans tried to decipher how a reborn doll turned into baby Jericho, exactly who killed the kid in the first place and what was up with the sinister caretaker, Leanne (Nell Tiger Free).

While Season 1 brought closure to most of these plot threads, the finale, "Balloon," set up even more intrigue with new mysteries surfacing. With a second season already green-lit, let's look at how things are set up for the Turners, Leanne and the villainous Church of Lesser Saints.

THE HUNT FOR THE CULT

When Sean (Toby Kebbell) speaks to the devilish Uncle George, who previously indicated he wanted Leanne back with his family, it becomes clear he's one of the patriarchs of a very quaint religious sect. Seeing as Leanne eventually leaves with him and their leader, Aunt May, the Turners will likely spend the second season hunting the cult down and trying to figure out what happened to their missing son.

We have no idea what exactly Leanne's powers are or how she brought Jericho back, so in essence, she did take the child with her and is definitely the key to reviving him. Dorothy will undoubtedly be leading the charge as she figured out the existence of May's cult from a past news story she was a part of. Still, May doesn't know the full extent of their powers and overall mission so it's going to be a treacherous journey. It's hinted George and May have been killing parents to kidnap 'gifted' kids like Leanne, so it's certain to be filled with some bloodshed.

Dorothy's as dangerous as ever as she's no longer in denial over the kid's death. She accepted her actions, is now lucid and recognizes the only way to get the child back is through Leanne being a member of their family. Clues have been dropped that Sean might actually have been corrupted by George as well in this tug of war via a ritual so Dorothy's war won't be an easy one. Sean could end up being George's inside man but nonetheless, Dorothy can rely on her brother Julian (Rupert Grint) to track Leanne's cult down. The group seemingly took out Julian's private investigator, Roscoe, so he too will be seeking revenge.

THE QUEST FOR REDEMPTION

This first season left everyone guessing who was a hero and who was a villain. We finally discover the cult's been manipulating Leanne's life by seemingly killing her parents to use her as a tool. Now, while the Turners were neglectful, Jericho's death was an accident, so in that sense, as much as she wanted to punish the wayward parents, Leanne does believe they deserve a second chance. Seeing as the cult found the runaway and pressured her into returning, there could be lingering resentment on Leanne's part.

She may have gone back 'home' but we don't know what she has planned for George and May. As seen with the dark practices she's involved in such as self-flagellation, Leanne just doesn't like sinners and has shown a desire to destroy families that hurt kids, which could now include her cult. The Turners were on this list but she knows they can atone, which is why she seemed to be coming around to forgive them. The same can't be said for the cult, as Leanne knows what they're capable of wilfully killing, not to mention they also threatened Jericho's life if she didn't rejoin.

Leanne may well be going back as an agent on the inside to destroy the cult and ensure no more kids like her are used as avatars for evil. It could also be the only way she gets to keep Jericho alive as the cult might offer him a home temporarily while she works her magic. As for the Turners, if they eventually unite and help Leanne, both parties could attain redemption and offer Jericho the home he deserves, as was the case in the beginning before all the dark truths and secrets spilled out into the open. They all have flaws but they're human (well, we're not sure about Leanne), and deserve a second chance, whereas the cult does seem to be unforgivable for the lives they took, including burning Leanne's home down.

A DARK EMPIRE RISES

Bringing down the cult won't be easy because the final scene shows how large their family is. We see various professionals embracing Leanne in the street as she leaves the Turners, and in the blink of an eye, they disappear. A cop car tries to investigate their huddle but it seems they teleported. Vanishing into thin air means there are others with supernatural abilities so Leanne might just be the first of many demonic soldiers George and May are honing as "servants" for their cause.

It'll be interesting to see the Turners and Julian tracking them because of the cult's reach and the people in power they know. It's clear that lawyers, cops and other officials will be part of this ring so there will be a lot of. With such a network, double-crossing will be easy, especially as we don't know the endgame of the cult, which means the Turners are already handicapped in the dark.

The fact George and May were able to cover up Leanne's kidnapping and her survival after her parents were burned to death says it all. The cult isn't just some back of the woods group like Dorothy thinks so this a truly devious enemy they'll be fighting. Leanne's been fearful of the church from day one and this creates an intimidating aura not even Julian might be able to combat. He's all about thugs and goons, but it seems they'll have to use their brains more than brawn in this battle of good against evil.

Created by Tony Basgallop and directed and executive produced by M. Night Shyamalan, Servant stars Toby Kebbell, Lauren Ambrose, Nell Tiger Free, and Rupert Grint. Season 1 is currently airing on Apple TV, with new episodes every Friday.
