M. Night Shyamalan had a reason to celebrate this weekend as his latest release, Knock at the Cabin, topped the box office, ending the seven-week winning streak of James Cameron's Avatar: The Way of Water.Shyamalan's Knock at the Cabin grossed $14.2 million over the weekend, which was enough to win the domestic weekend box office. Avatar: The Way of Water had been number one for seven weeks straight, and it had to settle for dropping to third place behind the apocalyptic thriller and the Paramount Pictures comedy 80 for Brady, which earned $12.5 million. Thus, Shyamalan took to his Twitter page to acknowledge his box office win but was completely humble about the feat. He also praised Cameron for Avatar and the privilege of sharing movie screens with him.RELATED: Knock at the Cabin's Book Is Even More Terrifying Than the M Night Shyamalan Movie

Shyamalan's Box Office Wins

As Shyamalan stated in his tweet, this is his seventh film to open in the top spot and his fourth #1 film with Universal Pictures. His winning streak began with his smash debut The Sixth Sense back in 1999, and it was followed by Signs (2002), The Village (2004), Split (2016), Glass (2019), Old (2021) and now Knock at the Cabin. The last four of those #1 releases were all made with Universal, and were self-financed by Shyamalan himself. Knock at the Cabin also has the distinction of being the first movie of 2023 to open at number one.

Avatar: The Way of Water began ruling the box office the moment it hit the big screen back on Dec. 16. The long-awaited sequel opened to $134.1 million and now has a domestic total of $634.4 million and a staggering global take of $2.1 billion and counting. The film is now the tenth highest-grossing movie of all time on the domestic front and has the number 9 slot currently occupied by Jurassic World ($653.4 million) in its sights. Globally, Cameron overtook his very own movie, Titanic, to become the #3 movie of all time overseas with a total of $1.53 billion through Sunday. In that category, The Way of Water now sits behind just the original Avatar and Avengers: Endgame.
