TV's Wonder Woman, Lynda Carter, offered a word of congratulations to the makers of Wonder Woman 1984 after it was announced the film would release in U.S. theaters and on HBO Max on Christmas Day.Carter tweeted, "Patty, Gal, and the entire cast and crew of #WW84: you worked so hard to bring the magic of Wonder Woman to life. Excited to hear we can all enjoy Diana's next chapter very soon! I love you all!"RELATED: Warner Bros. Explains Wonder Woman 1984's HBO Max Premiere

Carter was responding to a tweet from WW84 director Patty Jenkins that declared, "THE TIME HAS COME." Jenkins has spoken strongly in favor of the theater industry, and asked fans to watch "where it is made safe to do so (check out the great work theaters have done to make it so!)," noting it is "available in the safety of your home on HBO Max where it is not." WW84 star Gal Gadot also tweeted about the dual release.

Initially slated for theaters Dec. 13, 2019, Wonder Woman 1984's release date was moved several times, at first to get better positioning in the marketplace against other films, and then because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, which caused theater closures around the world. In October, Jenkins said a direct-to-streaming release "is not even being discussed." Warner Bros. released a statement Wednesday saying the dual release serves fans and exhibitors.

Carter starred in Wonder Woman from 1975 to 1979. Its first season was on ABC, and the show moved to CBS and was retitled The New Adventures of Wonder Woman as its setting changed from the 1940s to contemporary times. Carter guest starred in Seasons 2 and 4 of Supergirl as President Olivia Marsdin.

Directed and co-written by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman 1984 stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal and Natasha Rothwell. The film arrives in theaters and HBO Max on Dec. 25, while debuting theatrically in international markets starting on Dec. 16. The film will be available for a month on HBO Max in the U.S. included at no additional cost.
