Wonder Woman star Lynda Carter celebrated the 81st anniversary of the DC character's comic book debut by sharing a throwback video featuring an incredibly meta instance of her donning Diana Prince's iconic red and blue suit.

"It's been a long time since I put on the costume, but Diana has lived in my heart ever since. Happy Wonder Woman Day," Carter wrote on Twitter. The attached video is taken from the beginning of the Lynda Carter Special, which originally aired on CBS in 1980. In the clip, Carter, as Wonder Woman, introduces herself to the audience.

"There's a really terrific show about to begin," "Wonder Woman" says. "A very good friend of mine is in it. Her name is Lynda Carter. We did a series together for a few years, and now she's going out on her own, so I hope you'll all stay tuned... and watch."

Happy Wonder Woman Day

Created by William Moulton Marston with H.G. Peter, Diana Prince/Wonder Woman first appeared in All Star Comics #8, which is cover-dated December 1941/January 1942, though was actually released on Oct. 21, 1941. As such, Oct. 21 is recognized as Wonder Woman Day.

Cathy Lee Crosby was the first actor to play Diana Prince in live-action, starring in the 1974 ABC television film Wonder Woman. For many years, however, the performer most synonymous with the role was Carter, who portrayed the Princess of Themyscira in the 1970s Wonder Woman television series.

Carter first portrayed Wonder Woman in The New Original Wonder Woman, a television film that premiered on ABC in 1975 as a pilot for the TV show. The first season of Wonder Woman then ran on ABC from 1976 to 1977. The Carter-led superhero show jumped to CBS for Seasons 2 and 3, which aired from 1977 to 1979.

The role of Wonder Woman was eventually taken over by Gal Gadot, who brought the character to the DC Extended Universe. Gadot first played Diana Prince in the 2016 film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice before starring in 2017's Wonder Woman. She subsequently reprised the role in 2017's Justice League and the 2020's Wonder Woman 1984. 1984 also featured a cameo by none other than Carter, who stepped into the role of Asteria, a legendary Amazon warrior and the previous owner of Diana's golden armor.
