DCI John Luther is back and ready to bring justice in the Netflix film Luther: The Fallen Sun. Idris Elbra returns as the Special Crimes Unit detective in his most dangerous adventure as he attempts to stop the harrowing and seemingly unstoppable serial killer David Robey (Andy Serkis), who uses access to personal information to commit sadistic crimes. Luther: The Fallen Sun marks the character's first venture into film after the highly successful and popular TV show that aired for five seasons between 2010 and 2019.

CBR caught up with Elba to discuss why he keeps returning to Luther. The actor explained how the physical preparation for Luther: The Fallen Sun was no different from how he prepared for the role of Robert DuBois/Bloodsport in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad. Elba also clarified what differentiates Luther from a vigilante, even if their methods are similar.

CBR: What keeps pulling you back to play Luther?

Idris Elba: I think he's a relatable guy. That has very attractive attributes as an actor. He's complicated. He has a lot of stuff going on behind the eyes that allow me to sort of texturize him. The landscape of Luther as a character is vast. Obviously, we've been concentrated in London and "Lutherland." But now, "Lutherland "can be anywhere in the world. So for me, here's a relatable guy that will go to unrelatable lengths to catch a bad guy, and that's always attractive.

There are a lot of sensational fight scenes in this movie, particularly the prison sequence, which avoids a lot of cuts and flows almost like a singular shot. You've played some action-heavy roles before, like Bloodsport in The Suicide Squad. What was the preparation like for this film in comparison? Were there any unintentional injuries suffered here?

The prep was usually the same -- a lot of rehearsals. But this particular fight sequence in the film is so much more messy. [It's] designed to be as unpredictable and un-fight-scene-like as it can get. So that took a certain type of rehearsal. It's choreographed, of course, but it was quite messy. We didn't mind if things went wrong because that's part of what naturally might happen in a fight. I didn't hurt myself, thankfully. I kicked a guy in his chest, and he wasn't expecting it. It was a bit of a mistake, but I hope he's all right. [Laughs]

Idris Elba as DCI John Luther in Luther The Fallen Sun

Luther is very much a character that gets justice by any means necessary. What do you believe differentiates him from a vigilante?

I think he has a very grounded, cemented belief system in right over wrong. He's comfortable leaning into the wrong camp to correct a wrong. He's okay with being wrong himself to correct someone that's being wrong, but I don't believe he lives there. He believes [in] good over evil, if you like, and he's very committed to that. A vigilante has different goals, wants, and needs. Luther doesn't have necessarily wants or needs. He just has to put wrong to right.

Luther: The Fallen Sun hits Netflix on March 10.
