A television series and feature special based on Lumberjanes -- the Eisner Award-winning BOOM! Studios comic book series created by Shannon Watters, Grace Ellis, Brooklyn A. Allen and Noelle Stevenson -- are evidently coming to the HBO Max streaming platform.

This news comes courtesy of the Children's Media Association (CMA), which has released the information for its upcoming livestream event Radical Queer Joy: The Making of LGBTQ+ Children's Media. The aforementioned Stevenson -- known for her work on Netflix's She-Ra and the Princesses of Power -- is slated to be one of the panelists, with her background information text explaining that she recently sold an adaptation of Lumberjanes to HBO Max. According to the CMA, Stevenson will write, direct and executive produce a feature special based on the comic, which will then be followed up by a series.

The revelation that Lumberjanes is coming to HBO Max is somewhat surprising. It was previously believed that any future on-screen Lumberjanes project would be coming to Netflix, which signed a first-look deal for film and television rights with BOOM! back in April. CMA did not specify whether HBO Max's Lumberjanes special and series would be animated or live-action. However, it will likely be the former, given the Radical Queer Joy event's emphasis on animation. A live-action film based on Lumberjanes was previously in the works at 20th Century Fox, but was ultimately canceled after Fox was acquired by The Walt Disney Company. It remains to be seen if more details regarding HBO Max's adaptation will be revealed during the CMA stream.

Lumberjanes follows Jo, April, Molly, Mal and Ripley -- a group of Lumberjane Scouts attuning Miss Qiunzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet's Camp for Hardcore Lady Types. The comic was first published by BOOM! in 2014 and is slated to come to an end this December with the End of Summer special.
