The following contains spoilers for Star Wars #31, on sale now from Marvel.

Luke Skywalker reveals that sacred texts are more important than a lightsaber when it comes to being a Jedi in Star Wars #31.

Star Wars #31 comes from writer Charles Soule, artist Andrés Genolet, colorist Rachelle Rosenberg and letterer VC's Clayton Cowles. In the issue, Luke Skywalker is trying to find a way to get Holdo's ship after it's been left in an area of No-Space that's now completely inhabited by dangerous Killdroids. While coming up with a plan as to how they should do so while taking refuge at the Colony of Kezarat, Leia asks why returning to the ship is so urgent. "I would have thought you'd be more worried about getting your lightsaber back," she says. Luke's yellow lightsaber was taken by a young child named Forvan in Star Wars #30 when he arrived at Kezarat. The colony's leader, Captain Blythe, explained there are "no Jedi" at Kezarat and Luke will get his weapon back "in good time."

Luke Skywalker Reveals the Single Most Important Thing Needed to Be a Jedi

Why Jedi Texts Are More Important Than a Lightsaber

In response to Lei's question, Luke says he's "not even thinking" about getting his lightsaber back. "There's something aboard Holdo's ship that's completely irreplaceable, and without it, I have no idea how I'll ever keep moving forward in my training. I can be a Jedi without a lightsaber. I can find another one someday, if I have to." The item within Holdo's ship, he continues, is one of the sacred Jedi texts. "It has knowledge of the Force and the Order that I can't get anywhere else," he says. "Techniques, history, sites of great power across the galaxy, hints at places where I can learn even more. If I lose it, I will never truly become a Jedi."

Unbeknownst to Luke, one of the Kill-Droids throws the book away from Holdo's ship, and it's last seen dangling off a ledge within No-Space. The story continues in Star Wars #32, which releases March 1, 2023. The synopsis for the issue reads, "THE FORCE IS BROKEN? The efforts of Lady Qi’ra and Crimson Dawn to destroy the Sith have sent deep ripples running through the Force, disrupting Luke Skywalker’s connection to the deep powers of the galaxy. How far will he go to find what he has lost?"

Star Wars #31 features cover art by Stephen Segovia and Rain Beredo and variant cover art by John Tyler Christopher, Mateus Manhanini, Chris Sprouse, Karl Story, Neeraj Menon and Caspar Wijngaard. The issue is on sale now from Marvel.
