The following contains major spoilers for Devil's Reign: Omega #1, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

New York City is officially under new leadership within the Marvel Universe, and Luke Cage is wasting no time getting to work as the city's new mayor.

Throughout the course of Marvel's Devil's Reign series, Luke Cage has expressed an interest in running for mayor in an effort to unseat Wilson Fisk/Kingpin from the position. When Fisk is brought down by Matt Murdock and Elektra Natchios in Devil's Reign #6, the seat is left wide open for Cage to take as his wife, Jessica Jones, points out that he's now running completely unopposed. Variant cover art for Devil's Reign #6 created by Dan Panosian shows Cage officially announcing his mayoral candidacy in front of a crowd of cheering onlookers.

In Devil's Reign: Omega #1, the concluding chapter to Devil's Reign, Cage has been elected into the mayoral position. "If somebody had told me when I was a kid running around the streets of Harlem that I'd be mayor one day, I'd have told them they were out of their mind," Cage's inner monologue reads as he prepares for his first press conference. "The world was so simple back then...something popped off...the community got in check. We're a long way from that time. For some reason, I always felt like the world outside my bubble would one day come calling...and oh, was I right."

Reporters on the scene of the press conference point out that, following Fisk's rule and then sudden absence, New York City is experiencing a tremendous crime spike. While there are questions as to whether or not this wave in violence is due to a rise in vigilantism, it's clear the city is in need of someone who will take the necessary steps to promote unity.

Some may still wonder if Cage, a Hero for Hire himself, is the right man for the job, which Cage addresses head-on during the press conference. "It doesn't matter what you think," Cage tells the city. "I'm going to work my ass off, and alongside the citizens and lawmakers of New York, fix this city that I love with all my heart. I will be fair. I will be objective. But right now, my focus is restoring order and bringing safety to our streets. Folks are afraid, and I'm going to ease those fears with action."
