Luke Cage & Cloak and Dagger's References to Each Other Are 'Not By Mistake'

Cloak & Dagger and Luke Cage's references to one another are definitely by design. At Comic-Con International in San Diego, Head of Marvel Television Jeph Loeb revealed these mini "crossovers" were intentionally orchestrated behind the scenes.

Asked if fans could ever see Detective Misty Knight on Cloak & Dagger, Loeb teased that the show's reference to the character has potential for more: "We'll just say it was not by mistake."

"You know, what's been fun about it is I think Simone [Missick] is now giving [Rosario Dawson] a run for the money in terms of the shows! She's been on and been running around," he said.

Cloak & Dagger star Emma Lahana, who plays Detective Brigid O'Reilly, was thrilled to be a part of these references to the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe. "It's so cool because, when you're on set and you're saying the line, you're like, 'I hope people will pick up on it' and then you get this huge reaction!" she shared. "It's so cool to see that! It's so cool, because the fans seem so happy when they see how they link, and Simone [Missick] is a legend. She's so rad, so I think that she's the coolest. I'm so stoked that I got to be linked with her and set up that Brigid and Misty are friends."

As to whether or not she would like to show up on Luke Cage, she added, "You know, I would really like to do that. That would be a dream. I would love to go on Luke Cage. I love Luke Cage. That'd be rad."

In Cloak & Dagger's "Ghost Stories," O'Reilly namedropped "my friend Misty," clearly referencing Luke Cage character Detective Misty Knight. Cloak & Dagger‘s reference to Luke Cage followed on the heels of Luke Cage‘s reference to Cloak & Dagger. Midway through Season 2, Misty had a discussion with her coworker Detective Nandi Tyler in which Nandi mentioned O’Reilly. “Inspector West called. Callahan is in Maui, and O’Reilly moved to New Orleans,” she told Misty. “None of them know you quit. West said until One Police Plaza sends somebody else, you’re the highest ranking detective here.”

Airing Thursdays at 8 pm ET/PT on Freeform, Cloak & Dagger stars Olivia Holt as Tandy Bowen/Dagger and Aubrey Joseph as Tyrone Johnson/Cloak, as well as Andrea Roth as Tandy’s mother Melissa Bowen, Gloria Reuben as Tyrone’s mother Adina Johnson, Miles Mussenden as Tyrone’s father Michael Johnson, Carl Lundstedt as Tandy’s partner in crime Liam, James Saito as Dr. Bernard Sanjo and J.D.
