Marvel has announced that Sonia Braga has joined the cast of the upcoming Netflix series "Luke Cage." Braga, an Emmy and three-time Golden Globe nominee, will portray Soledad Temple, the mother of Rosario Dawson's Claire Temple. Dawson's nurse character has become a staple of Marvel's lineup of Netflix shows, appearing as a recurring character in "Daredevil" before moving on to appearances in "Jessica Jones" and "Luke Cage.".
"Sonia Braga? Rosario Dawson? 'Nuff said. I'm tuning in," executive producer and showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker said in a statement on Marvel.com. "When it came to finding someone who was both formidable yet possessed a light touch, Sonia was the perfect choice and has been a Godsend."
Braga was nominated for both an Emmy and Golden Globe in 1995 for her performance in "The Burning Season." Roles in "Moon Over Parador" and "Kiss of the Spider Woman" earned her two more Golden Globe nods. Braga's resume also includes stints on the TV series "Alias," "Sex and the City" and "Brothers and Sisters"
"A character as strong as Claire needs an equally powerful mother, and with Sonia we found the perfect actress to deliver the stellar performance we needed," Head of Marvel Television Jeph Loeb said in Marvel's announcement. "In 'Marvel's Luke Cage,' fans will now get a chance to see where Claire got the fire we love her for."
Series lead Mike Colter made his debut as Luke Cage in "Jessica Jones," which started streaming on Netflix last week. Joining Colter in "Luke Cage" will be Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple, Simone Missick as Misty Knight, Alfre Woodard as Mariah Dillard, Frank Whaley as Detective Rafael Scarfe, Mahershala Ali as Cornell Cottonmouth and Theo Rossi.
"Luke Cage" will be available streaming only on Netflix in 2016.
