One Piece Film: Red is the 15th theatrical release in the long-running series, and sees the Straw Hat Pirates traveling to a new island in order to attend a famous music festival. All of the members of the crew, as well as a few of the series' reoccuring characters, will receive new punk-rock themed costumes for the movie. The movie will also introduce a new character, Uta, a popular pop-singer who is actually the long estranged daughter of Red-Haired Shanks, the charismatic captain who originally gave Luffy his straw hat and inspired the young boy to take up the life of a pirate. The most recent trailer revealed that in addition to her connection with Shanks, Uta and Luffy have actually known each other since they were children.

In addition to drawing new art and designing Uta, Oda is supervising production of the new movie. The script for the new film is being penned by Tsutomu Kuroiwa, who previously wrote One Piece Film: Gold. The Straw Hats' latest theatrical outing is being directed by Goro Taniguchi, who is best known for his work on Code Geass. Taniguchi previously directed the 1998 animated special One Piece: Defeat Him! The Pirate Ganzack!, which was the first anime adaptation of Oda's then-new manga.
