WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Lucifer's Season 5B, streaming now on Netflix.

Lucifer co-showrunner Joe Henderson explains why it was important for Charlie to be mortal.

In an exclusive interview with CBR, Henderson delved further into why Lucifer's writers ended up choosing Amenadiel's son to be mortal, as opposed to being a Celestial like his father, stating, "It's interesting. We had a big debate on what we wanted to do with Charlie. A big part of Amenadiel's arc for Season 5 is facing the legacy of his own father."

The Shadecraft writer continued, "Now that you've watched Season 5A and 5B, you see how much it's all part of this whole idea of fatherhood -- expecting your children to be one thing and discovering that they're another. And not even being disappointed by it, but actually being proud of it or just accepting your children for who they are, because you can't control what they're going to become."

Henderson concluded, "That was a thing we really wanted to explore in Season 5. And with Amenadiel, it just felt like such a great example. In Season 1, he's God's favorite son. He's the rule follower. He's the ultimate Angel. And for him to have a child who appears to be human, it's such a great challenge for a character and a great testament to how strong his character is."

Season 5B follows several threads related to the complications and joys of fatherhood, including Amenadiel's acceptance that his son is no less beloved for being mortal. The latest half of the hit Netflix series also shows how Amenadiel's relationship with his own father changes now that understands the role of being a father. However, not all of Amenadiel's siblings are as forgiving, especially Lucifer, who remains unconvinced until the season's end that his father did ever care about him and his choices.

Lucifer's upcoming sixth season will be the show's last. Amenadiel-actor D.B. Woodside also directed the final season's eighth episode, "Save the Devil, Save the World."

Lucifer stars Tom Ellis as Lucifer Morningstar, Lauren German as Det. Chloe Decker, D.B. Woodside as Amenadiel, Rachael Harris as Dr. Linda Martin, Kevin Alejandro as Det. Dan Espinoza, Lesley-Ann Brandt as Mazikeen Smith and Aimee Garcia as Ella Lopez. Season 5B is now on Netflix.
