This May, Netflix's Lucifer returns for the back half of Season 5, which will then be followed by the show's sixth and final season. However, while Season 5B and Season 6 both contribute to the Lucifer's larger narrative, fans can expect these two new chapters to be very different from one another in their approach.
"I love them both in different ways. Season 5B is big and epic. Season 6 is sweet and personal," Lucifer co-showrunner Joe Henderson said during an interview with wordballoon. "I don't even know how to compare them. They're so wildly different, and yet, so very much of a whole. They're very much part of a story going on."
Elsewhere in the interview, Henderson said, "Every season of Lucifer completes the story, but also teases something to come. And that is something we have done every single season. We are wrapping up Season 5. We are going to finish that story, but like any good serial storytelling, you're gonna wanna come back for Season 6 -- and we will give you a pretty good reason." When asked to describe Lucifer Season 6 in three words, Henderson replied, "All good things."
Based on the Vertigo/DC Comics character of the same name created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg for the Sandman universe, Lucifer originally premiered on Fox in 2016 and was canceled after three seasons. Netflix then revived Lucifer for Season 4 in 2019 and subsequently renewed it for Season 5. Season 5 was initially announced as Lucifer's final season, though the show was ultimately renewed for Season 6 following continued negotiations.
Lucifer Season 5 is 16 episodes long and has been split into two equal parts. The first eight episodes released as Season 5A on Aug. 21, 2020. The remaining eight episodes will arrive as part of Season 5B on Friday, May 28. Meanwhile, Season 6 will run for a total of 10 episodes and currently lacks a premiere date. Lucifer Season 6 wrapped production on Monday, March 29, causing the hashtag #ThankYouLucifer to trend on Twitter.
