WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Lucifer Season 5B, now streaming on Netflix.

The final season of Lucifer will be shorter than Season 5 -- for a very good reason.

"So first, what happened is, they called us up. They're like, 'Can you do a Season 6? Do you have a story for Season 6?' And we basically said, 'We'll only do it if we find a story worthy,'" Lucifer co-showrunner Joe Henderson told Collider. "And Ildy and I talked a bunch, and we got the room together, we all talk. And then we found a story, but it felt like 10 episodes. Sometimes you just get a sense of things. You're like... There's a certain amount of story to be told with a certain engine."

Henderson then went to explain that part of the reasoning also adhered to the old showbusiness adage of always leaving the audience wanting more. "And we also just... we didn't want to overstay our welcome," he added. "We wanted to make sure that Season 6 was tight and strong and focused, and 10 felt like the exact right number of episodes to let us still play a little bit, but also make sure we stuck the landing. Because that's the thing we've been holding on to the entire time. 'Let's make sure that by deciding to go one more season, we don't ruin this beautiful story that we've been telling, and not get the exact right end point that we want to get to.'"

Season 5 of Lucifer was originally slated to be the series' last. However, after successful talks with series lead Tom Ellis, a sixth and true final season was announced. Production on Season 6 wrapped in March, which caused the hashtag #ThankYouLucifer to trend on Twitter.

In Season 5B, Lucifer fought his twin brother Michael for the right to become the new God after their father decided it was time for him to retire. As the season came to a close, Lucifer stood victorious, proclaiming, "Oh my... me."

Lucifer stars Tom Ellis as Lucifer Morningstar, Lauren German as Det. Chloe Decker, D.B. Woodside as Amenadiel, Rachael Harris as Dr. Linda Martin, Kevin Alejandro as Det. Dan Espinoza, Lesley-Ann Brandt as Mazikeen Smith and Aimee Garcia as Ella Lopez. Season 5B is now on Netflix.
