WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Lucifer Season 5B, streaming now on Netflix.

Co-showrunner Joe Henderson discussed why he hid a certain character's return in Lucifer's Season 5B.

Henderson was asked about the reappearance of Tricia Helfer, who played Charlotte/The Goddess of All Creation, in a recent interview with TVLine. "So much of God's story is his relationship to Lucifer, but it's also his relationship to Mom — and by the way, I have lied in multiple interviews, saying she was not coming back. That 'this is all God’s story,' because I didn't want anyone to know about this so they could be surprised," said Henderson.

Fans were led to believe that The Goddess, who left to create her own universe, was incapable of returning. However she made a reappearance in Season 5, to surprisingly repair her relationship with God. Henderson described The Goddess' experience by saying, "But a big part of Mom’s story was her frustration with God, and it felt important to us to speak to the fact that she was right to be frustrated."

While The Goddess underwent her own transformation, so did God. God experienced a change in his relationship with his sons, notably Lucifer, when he admitted that he loved them. Henderson explained that The Goddess also played a role in God's self-actualization journey, stating, "She was the hero of her own story in Season 2, and God realized that maybe he needed to spend some time in her world after she spent so much time in his. Allowing his wife to show him the things that he needs to learn felt like a really nice payoff for Season 2, but also growth for God in this season. It was super important to us, and also Tricia Helfer... she's the greatest."

Lucifer stars Tom Ellis as Lucifer Morningstar, Lauren German as Det. Chloe Decker, D.B. Woodside as Amenadiel, Rachael Harris as Dr. Linda Martin, Kevin Alejandro as Det. Dan Espinoza, Lesley-Ann Brandt as Mazikeen Smith and Aimee Garcia as Ella Lopez. Season 5B is now on Netflix.
