While the first half of Lucifer Season 5 is set to premiere on Netflix this week, principal photography remains incomplete on the season finale due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic temporarily suspending production on the Vertigo Comics adaptation.

Lucifer star Tom Ellis provided new details on the upcoming season, noting that production had begun with the intention to provide an epic conclusion to the entire series before receiving a surprise renewal for a sixth and final season from Netflix. However, the global health crisis shut down production in the midst of filming the Season 5 finale.

"We were agonizingly close to wrapping but lockdown beat us," Ellis observed in an interview with DA MAN. "We still have 60% of our Season five finale to shoot."

Undeterred, Ellis revealed that working with new cast member Dennis Haysbert as God was a professional highlight for him during production on Season 5, and that many of its episodes will run for closer to a full hour than usual. While Ellis is uncertain of when filming will resume complete the season finale, the actor noted that the pandemic will come with additional safety precautions for the cast and crew's health to prevent the pandemic's spread.

"It’s going to be challenging to say the least. We’ve had to find a way to stay safe whilst remaining productive. Film sets are usually a hive of activity with people constantly making adjustments and last-minute tweaks in small, confined spaces," Ellis explained. "Now, with the restrictions, everyone has to take their turn to do their job, so it’s going to have a big knock on effect to how much we can physically shoot in a day."
