Lucifer showrunners Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich reacted positively to Gwendolyn Christie's casting as Lucifer for Netflix's The Sandman series.

Henderson told Collider he thinks Christie is an "amazing" pick for the role, adding that she will bring "a completely different tone" to the Lucifer character than Tom Ellis did on their series. "And the character from [The] Sandman [comic books] is such a different character, I think casting someone who has just such a different energy... I think it's just awesome," he added. "I'm dying to see the first picture of her in character. I could not be more happy."

Co-created by Neil Gaiman, Mike Dringenberg and Sam Kieth, the DC Comics iteration of Lucifer Samael Morningstar was inspired by Biblical lore and first appeared in 1989's The Sandman (Vol. 2) #4. Having tired of reigning over Hell, Lucifer handed control of the realm over to Morpheus, AKA Dream of the Endless. Mike Carey wrote the Lucifer solo comic book series that ran from 2000-2006, charting the character's various adventures after abandoning their kingdom.

When Collider suggested Christie's Lucifer should wear a "wonderful suit" to match Ellis's, Henderson replied "I hope so. I mean, I would like to watch the adventures of Gwendoline Christie and Tom Ellis both playing different versions of Lucifer on a road trip together." Modrovich supported the idea, playfully calling for a "movie" featuring the two versions of Lucifer.

Shortly after Christie's casting as Lucifer was announced, Gaiman explained the differences between The Sandman's version of the character and the one played by Ellis, stating "The theology and cosmogony of Lucifer is a long way from Sandman’s. It’s 'inspired by' Sandman, but you can’t easily retrofit the Lucifer version to get back to Sandman, if you see what I mean." He endorsed Christie's casting in a separate post, saying "Casting Lucifer was a delight. I'm so very glad that [Chrisie] is the Ruler of Hell in Sandman on [Netflix]."

Lucifer stars Tom Ellis as Lucifer Morningstar, Lauren German as Det. Chloe Decker, D.B. Woodside as Amenadiel, Rachael Harris as Dr. Linda Martin, Kevin Alejandro as Det. Dan Espinoza, Lesley-Ann Brandt as Mazikeen Smith and Aimee Garcia as Ella Lopez. All five seasons are currently streaming on Netflix.
