Netflix's Lucifer topped television's 2021 charts and surprisingly surpassed several of the streamer's other hit series, including Squid Game, Bridgerton and Cobra Kai.

Ranking first place on Nielsen's yearly list of the United states' most-streamed original series, Lucifer's 93 episodes dominated with more than 18.3 billion streaming minutes, according to Deadline. The six-season fantasy drama, which had its series finale this past September, follows the fallen angel Lucifer Morningstar as he helps Detective Chloe Decker solve Los Angeles crimes. But despite the show's popularity, the recently released ratings may shock some Netflix users since Lucifer barely made the platform's published top 10 list of global programming. The simple reason behind the discrepancy is that Netflix's chart only recognized Lucifer's last season rather than its overall ratings.

Fox debuted Lucifer in 2016, renewing it for two additional seasons before abruptly canceling the show. However, Netflix then picked up the series and produced more seasons. Following its 2018 streaming debut, Lucifer's popularity steadily grew as returning fans intertwined with newcomers, culminating in 2021's massive global audience. Other outsourced shows with Netflix-produced seasons, Cobra Kai, You and Longmire, also ranked highly in national original programming.

Netflix's hit series Squid Game took Nielsen's second-place slot with a 16.4 billion viewership minutes. However, while Lucifer outpaced the Korean drama by more than 2 billion, it's important to note the comparatively different episode count between the series. Netflix users indulged among Lucifer's 93 installments, while Squid Game's mere nine episodes clocked incredible streaming minutes, which vastly exceeded programming from all streaming platforms. Making a similar 2021 introduction, Netflix's period romance Bridgerton ranked fifth with a 12.3 billion minutes. Unsurprisingly, Netflix has confirmed season renewals for both Squid Game and Bridgerton.

Only three non-Netflix shows made Nielsen's original programming list. Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale, Apple TV's Ted Lasso and Disney+'s WandaVision. Additionally, Netflix dominated the acquired programming chart, with Criminal Minds, Cocomelon and Grey's Anatomy ranking in the first three slots, respectively. However, Disney+ programming dominated Nielsen's streaming movie list. Animated hits Luca, Moana, Raya and the Last Dragon and Frozen 2 sequentially took the top four placements, with ratings ranging from 10.5 to 5.7 billion streaming minutes.

All six seasons of Lucifer are streaming on Netflix.
