The sixth and final season of Netflix's Lucifer is slated to feature an animated episode titled "Yabba Dabba Do Me." In order to make this unconventional chapter in its final outing a reality, the devilish crime drama enlisted team members from an entirely different DC Comics adaptation: HBO Max's Harley Quinn.

In an interview with ColliderLucifer co-showrunner Joe Henderson revealed that Harley Quinn supervising producer Jennifer Coyle and a team of animators from the show stepped in to handle the animation for "Yabba Dabba Do Me." Written by Henderson and directed by Nathan Hope, the animated adventure will serve as Lucifer Season 6's third episode.

Henderson explained that an animated episode of Lucifer is something he's "always wanted to do," but that he never thought it could be a real possibility. That is, of course, until the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic hit. "I just didn't think I'd actually get to, because it's just such an undertaking," he said. "But it was COVID and we were looking for ways to have fewer days on set. And so the problem became the opportunity, because I secretly had been wanting to do it for years."

Regarding the Harley Quinn team's involvement, Henderson added, "We got super lucky, because we had this just incredibly lucky window of time where you have these animators who can just bring so much humanity to cartoons. And so it was just this wonderful confluence." While Henderson did not reveal how or why Lucifer Morningstar and Chloe Decker actually end up as cartoons, he assures the justification is something "that is organic to our show, similar to what [co-showrunner Ildy Modrovich] had to find in her musical episode."

Based on the DC/Vertigo Comics character of the same name created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg for the Sandman universe, Lucifer premiered on Fox in 2016. Fox canceled the show after three seasons. Netflix then picked it up for Season 4, which premiered in 2019. Season 5A arrived in 2020, with Season 5B following suit earlier this year. Lucifer Season 5 was originally announced as the series' last, though the show was ultimately renewed for Season 6, which is slated to premiere next month.

Meanwhile, Harley Quinn originally premiered on the DC Universe streaming service in November 2019, with Season 2 following suit in April 2020. Amid the restructuring of DC Universe, both seasons were added to HBO Max in August 2020. The following month, it was announced that the adult animated series would return for a third season exclusively on HBO Max. Harley Quinn Season 3 is expected to arrive on the platform either late this year or early next year, though does not currently have an official premiere date. That being said, Harley Quinn: The Animated Series: The Eat. Bang! Kill. Tour -- a comic book limited series set between the events of Seasons 2 and 3 -- is currently ongoing at DC.
