Low Key Comics releases first ongoing title, “The Last Days Of El Rey”

Official Press Release

Omaha, NE, February 8, 2006 – Low Key Comics is pleased to announce the
release of THE LAST DAYS OF EL REY #1, the first of several planned new
ongoing series from the small publisher to be released in 2006.

The first EL REY story appeared in LOW KEY COMICS #1, an anthology released
in the spring of 2005. The book, written by Nick Morton and illustrated by
his brother Kyle Morton, tells the story of El Rey, a mythical town not on
any maps where criminals can live out their lives and spend their stolen
earnings without fear of the law breathing down their necks. “I hesitate to
refer to it as a criminal retirement town,” notes artist Kyle Morton,
“because as our story progresses, the readers will discover that these
criminals are anything but retired.”

The inspiration of the story traces back to a 1959 pulp novel. “The town
itself, El Rey, was inspired by the classic pulp noir novel *The Getaway*,
written by equally classic pulp noir author Jim Thompson,” Kyle explains.
“Thompson only devoted a single chapter to this dark little haven, and Nick
and I both felt there was a much bigger story to tell.”

The primary storyline for EL REY revolves around how this once prosperous
community is eventually reduced to ruins. “The first issue is really just
the tip of the iceberg,” Kyle reveals. “We set up all the major players and
their various rivalries which will all serve as catalysts to the town’s
downfall. I think my brother and I are on the same page, though, knowing
that it’s the little stories that are going to make this comic truly
special, and every character in this burg has their own unique ‘little’
story to tell.”

The brothers’ chemistry on the title is one of its biggest strengths.
“Working with my brother has been a blast,” Kyle enthuses. “This is the
first time that we’ve collaborated on a story and it’s been a pretty
inspirational experience to say the least. Kicking ideas around on the phone
and online always gets my creative juices flowing, because I know we have a
unique set of characters that we both care about and that’s what’s going to
make the finished product really special.”

EL REY may be the first full release from the fledgling Low Key Comics, but
it’s definitely not the last, with several upcoming mini-series and the new
anthology LOW KEY COMICS #2 due out in spring and early summer. “I love that
for the past ten years we’ve been building towards this,” Kyle declares.
“All the core creators are guys I’ve known for years and it’s been great to
watch us all grow from rank amateurs to true professionals with the same
collective dream. I love that we can bicker and have heated arguments one
day, then share genuine admiration for each other’s abilities and talent the
next. We’ve come a long way, guys…let’s keep going.”
