The weekend’s big box-office battle was between three teenagers developing superpowers and a young man dealing with a vengeful ghost. And, as it turned out, the teenagers walked away with the victory, but just barely.
According to Box Office Mojo, Fox’s low-budget Chronicle, directed by Josh Trank from a screenplay by Max Landis and Trank, grossed $22 million — just $1 million more than CBS Films’ The Woman in Black, which stars Harry Potter alum Daniel Radcliffe. It’s a result that must certainly please Fox, which made the buzz-generating Chronicle for just $12 million.
The third, fourth and fifth top-grossing movies didn’t fair very well, with the wolf-based The Grey raking in another $9.5 million, the whale-based Big Miracle pulling $8.48 million and the monster-based Underworld: Awakening chomping another $5.6 million.
With the Super Bowl taking place on Sunday, it seems like the studios held back their larger movies, and it shows in these numbers. We’ll see how flicks like The Vow, Safe House, Journey 2 and the 3D release of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace do next week.
