One of HBO's most acclaimed original series of 2020 is Lovecraft Country, an adaption of the horror novel of the same name by Matt Ruff that was developed for television by Misha Green. And while the Season 1 finale reached the conclusion of its literary source material and seemed to bring several characters' stories to definitive end, it also opened a whole multiverse of alternate dimensions and divergent timelines ripe for exploration in future seasons.

Here is all the official news to date on plans for a second season of Lovecraft Country.

What Is Lovecraft Country's Story?

Lovecraft Country Season 1 takes place in 1950s America and follows a Korean War veteran named Atticus Freeman who returns to his hometown of Chicago. After learning his estranged father Montrose is apparently being held against his will in Ardham, Massachusetts, Atticus travels cross-country with his childhood friend Letitia Lewis and beloved uncle George Freeman to rescue him, navigating systemic racism every step of the way. Tic and his friends rescued Montrose from a sinister cult, known as the Sons of Adam, who were actually targeting Atticus because he is the last male descendant of their founder Titus Braithwaite and is, therefore, key to opening a portal to the Garden of Eden. Magical feedback kills most of the cult but George is killed in the group's escape.

Christina Braithwaite pursues Atticus and his friends back to Chicago, arranging Leti's acquisition of a haunted house while coercing Tic into recovering pages from the Book of Names that contain a spell that would enable her to gain immortality. After Tic's Aunt Hippolyta stumbles across a secret planetarium run by the Sons of Adam, she gains the ability to open portals throughout space and time, including a multiverse where Atticus recovers a paperback novel written by his and Leti's future adult son, which predicts Atticus' final fate. Using the translated Book of Names, Christina temporarily succeeds in gaining immortality with Tic's blood, bleeding him to death, but is thwarted by Ji-Ah, a kumiho Tic met in South Korea, before being killed by Tic's cousin Diana.

What Were the Plans For Lovecraft Country Season 2?

In the weeks after the Season 1 finale, showrunner Misha Green confirmed there have been talks with the premium cable network about the show's potential future, including plans for a second season. Green noted that while the first season adapted Ruff's novel, she has "20 seasons" worth of story that could be told following people of color reclaiming genre spaces. With the introduction of a multiverse linked to Hippolyta Freeman in Season 1, there were indeed countless directions future seasons could go.

Will Lovecraft Country Get a Season 2?

Filming on Season 1 of Lovecraft Country began in July 2018, over two years before the series' eventual premiere in August 2020. However, nearly two years after the series premiere, HBO publicly announced that it would not be proceeding with a second season of Lovecraft Country, releasing a written statement through TheWrap confirming the cancellation and wishing Green well.

"We will not be moving forward with a second season of Lovecraft Country," said the statement. "We are grateful for the dedication and artistry of the gifted cast and crew, and to Misha Green, who crafted this groundbreaking series. And to the fans, thank you for joining us on this journey."

As of last update to this article, Lovecraft Country has officially ended, and so no Season 2 is in production.

Starring Jonathan Majors, Jurnee Smollett, Aunjanue Ellis, Abbey Lee, Jada Harris, Wunmi Mosaku and Michael K. Williams, Season 1 of Lovecraft Country is available to stream on HBO Max.
