In Love and Monsters, Joel Dawson uses a sketchbook to jot down a few practical tips about surviving the apocalypse. Now, CBR can exclusively unveil a detailed look at several of his sketches, as provided by Paramount Pictures.

The four pieces of concept art, which appear in Joel's sketchbook throughout the film, offer an up-close and personal look at two mutated creatures: the Spuzzard and the Pool Frog. The Spuzzard concept art highlights its "eyes like tumors," "mutated slime" and "huge talon claws," with an "insect spiky shell" and "freakiest head I have ever seen." Despite its "8/10 Danger Level," Joel also points out its weaknesses: "Poor vision in the dark -- shoot it in the beak or soft spots."

Likewise, the Pool Frog boasts "freaky eyes!" and "razor sharp teeth," while maintaining the "size of an elephant." Fortunately, its "huge long tongue" -- which is "very slimey [sic] and sticky, covered in saliva and gross stuff" -- can be easily repelled by man's best friend. Here, the concept art also features a sketch of Boy, Joel's dog companion, who also happened to save his life from the aforementioned Pool Frog. "Dog biting the frog tongue -- saving my life," he noted. "Weakness: dogs."

According to the film's synopsis,

First love can be tough -- and giant monsters taking over the Earth's surface doesn't exactly make it easier. LOVE AND MONSTERS takes place seven years after a "monsterpocalypse" forces all of humanity to move into underground colonies. As Joel Dawson (Dylan O'Brien, Maze Runner, Teen Wolf) watches his fellow survivors pair off, he decides to brave the surface and face the monsters standing between himself and his high school sweetheart Aimee (Jessica Henwick, Iron Fist, Game of Thrones). Along his dangerous journey, Joel makes unlikely friends including a heroic dog and a pair of survivalists (Michael Rooker, Guardians of the Galaxy; Ariana Greenblatt, The One And Only Ivan, Avengers: Infinity War) who help him survive the monster-infested road to true love.
