The following contains spoilers for Lou, now streaming on Netflix.

In Netflix's Lou, Allison Janney's titular character came face-to-face with a deadly match and her worst nightmare. Lou could usually hold her own on an island wrecked by a storm, but she ended up facing a formidable Special Ops soldier in Phil (Logan Marshall-Green). Lou's main goal was to get Phil's daughter, Vee, back to her mom, Hannah (Birds of Prey's Jurnee Smollett), but Phil was difficult to track after he kidnapped the girl. It culminated in a brutal battle filled with dark secrets from Lou's past, paving the way for a bloody ending that reminded viewers how ghosts of old always come back to haunt.

How Did Lou and Hannah Find Phil and Vee?

Lou's big secret was that Phil was Lou's son -- someone she used her CIA contacts to get black-listed and arrested after he went off the rails in Central America. He was abusive to Hannah, so Lou had to get the monster put away. Part of it was due to her own guilt, too, as she abandoned him and let him become this aggressive soldier -- all because she regretted having him when she went undercover during the Reagan regime's Iran coup.

Phil returned with a fury, eventually leaving a message to lure Lou and Hannah out to a tower on the island after they took out his colleagues and ruined his chance of escape. Sadly, Lou knew he was prepared to kill them all just to show her how her actions had consequences. However, Lou was badly injured, which led to Hannah going it alone and meeting Phil at the tower.

How Did Hannah Rescue Vee From Phil?

In Lou's final battle, Vee pretended she had to go to the bathroom after Hannah gave her their secret code to hide. Hannah then stabbed Phil before heading downstairs. She and the girl struggled to escape, but thankfully, Lou showed up after hijacking and re-rigging the explosives that Phil had set down. She broke the signal, allowing them all time to flee.

This endangered Phil, who was now as desperate as ever to finish his family off. He knew he'd never be forgiven or accepted by them, plus Lou had burned them both when she blackmailed the CIA to come after him. Amid Phil's revenge scheme, Lou managed to blow up the tower using her own radio signal, but it was part of a trap for the CIA chopper that got word of their feud.

What Happened to Lou and Phil's Family?

Lou fought Phil on the shore, which left both badly wounded. This bought time for Hannah and Vee to run, allowing Lou an opening for her risky plan. She held Phil tightly, hugging him to let him know she was sorry she failed him. The chopper fired down on them, making it seem like both got shot and pulled out to sea. However, it did feel like Phil alone died, as he took the brunt of the gunfire, not to mention Lou's body was never recovered.

Lou ended with all the dirt out in the open and Hannah and Vee departing via ferry to start a new life in Seattle with the money Lou left them. Lou always wanted that for her family, ergo why she plotted and got them out to the island -- so she could watch over them until she was sure Phil was dead. The final shot had a woman looking out from the balcony with binoculars, though, cutting a similar figure to Lou, hinting she was alive, disguised and secretly keeping watch over the duo.
