The Rings of Power is the most expensive show yet for Amazon's Prime Video, with the first season alone reportedly costing the streamer $465 million. Based on the characters and world built by JRR Tolkein, The Rings of Power is intended to be a 50-hour, five-season series that will take place during the Second Age of Middle-earth, thousands of years before the events of Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Director J.A. Bayona has teased that the prequel series is so expansive that it cannot even be considered television. "The Rings Of Power is not television," Bayona said. "It's a new form we're creating here."

Rings of Power's Epic Story

In another interview, showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay shared a similar sentiment as Bayona. They explained how the prequel series sets itself apart from Peter Jackson's original Lord of the Rings film trilogy. In particular, The Rings of Power will have more action sequences than "any television or streaming show we've ever seen." While the series will set itself apart from previous adaptations, the showrunners have stated that the upcoming series has "deep roots" in Tolkien's original work.

"We feel that this story isn't ours," McKay said. "It's a story we're stewarding that was here before us and was waiting in those books to be on Earth. We don't feel ‘vaguely connected.' We feel deeply, deeply connected to those folks and work every day to even be closer connected. That's really how we think about it."

Shortly after the two-episode premiere of Rings of Power in September, Amazon suspended ratings for the series in an effort to combat review-bombing. Generally, fans initially appeared divided on the series, particularly in regards to storyline and character, though a large portion of its audience has praised the show's cinematography and its "stunning" imagery and visual effects. Feedback on the review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes showed a critics' rating of 84%, while the audience score was a rotten 38% at the time of writing.
