Galadriel's part in The Lord of the Rings is brief, but it has an ever-lasting impact on the story. Her insight, inspiration and gifts all carry through to the very end, and her actions, both on and off-screen, helped bring Sauron to his defeat. But after Sauron is gone and all is said and done, Galadriel is only shown departing Middle-earth with Gandalf and Elrond. So, what exactly happened to her once the war was over?

While Galadriel is a fun and mysterious side-character in The Lord of the Rings, the recent The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power really brought her center stage. No matter the accuracy of the adaptation, there's no denying that it got a key point across -- Galadriel had been relentlessly fighting against Sauron for thousands of years. And after the Dark Lord finally fell, she had certainly earned a much-needed rest.

Even though Sauron was defeated, it didn't mean peace instantly returned to Middle-earth. To the south, Sauron's forces were still waging war and ignorant of their master's demise. One of the enemy's key fortresses was at Dol Guldur in Mirkwood forest, where Sauron had regained his strength. And it is here that Galadriel helped push back the forces of evil once and for all.

Leaving their home of Lothlorian, Galadriel and her Elven army worked together with Thranduil, the king of the Woodland Realm. With their forces combined, they led a siege against Dol Guldur and the Orcs inside, completely wiping them out and tearing the fortress to the ground. And this hard-earned victory marked the last battle Galadriel ever fought.

With the battle over, Middle-earth was left in ruin from the war. Most characters in The Lord of the Rings got to work rebuilding what was lost, but Galadriel decided to rest. She had begun her war against Sauron halfway through the Second Age, meaning that by the time Sauron was defeated, she had been in the fight for over 3000 years. She also knew that the Elves were preparing to leave Middle-earth and savored this well-earned time of peace.

Galadriel later attended Aragorn's wedding and coronation, which marked the beginning of peace across the land. With the king crowned, she then took her leave and was never mentioned again until her time to sail into the West. Finally, with a boat carrying Elves and the Ring-bearers, Galadriel said her goodbyes for one last time and sailed back home to the Undying Lands.

After her departure, Galadriel is only ever mentioned again by Gimli, who travels into the West with his best friend Legolas in hopes of seeing her one more time. But their meeting is never described. As for the Elf herself, it's assumed she lived a peaceful life with her kin, knowing she did everything possible in the war against Sauron.
