The Lord of the Rings star Sean Astin confirmed he can't wait for Amazon Studios' upcoming series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

Astin, who played Samwise Gamgee in Peter Jackson's big screen adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien's original novels, discussed The Rings of Power in an interview at Calgary Expo 2022. "I for one am excited [for the show]," he said. "I saw the preview for it, and it gave me chills. It looked like they got it. I've been saying the whole time, they're gonna do it right. There's no way Amazon is gonna pay almost a billion dollars for a franchise just to screw it up."

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has been shrouded in mystery since it was announced in November 2017. The secrecy surrounding the production was reportedly so intense that actors were cast for The Rings of Power without knowing which characters they had been hired to play. Amazon Studios Head of U.S./Global Television Vernon Sanders defended this decision and others like it, saying, "We believe all of that work and all of that security and all of that protection will actually be to the benefit of our customers."

Details about the Middle-earth adaptation's story and characters have been more forthcoming in recent months, however. In February 2022, Amazon Studios released a series of posters teasing the major players in The Rings of Power, including their names. Alongside familiar faces like Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) and Elrond (Robert Aramayo), fans now know they can expect to meet several newcomers like Prince Durin IV (Owain Arthur), Princess Disa (Sophia Nomvete) and Arondir (Ismael Cruz Córdova).

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power teaser trailer dropped shortly after, during Super Bowl LVI. While the teaser gave little away in terms of the show's plot, it nevertheless offered fans plenty to mull over. This included what appeared to be the first on-screen appearance of Númenor, a key location in Middle-earth history only mentioned in Jackson's movies.

New Rings of Power announcements have been less frequent since the trailer aired, however, the reports regarding the show's cast continue to trickle in. The most recent of these was the news that Tyroe Muhafidin had joined The Rings of Power cast as Theo, son of Nazanin Boniadi's human healer Bronwyn. No other details regarding Muhafidin's role are available at this stage.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power arrives on Prime Video on Sept. 2, 2022.
