While Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings is considered tame compared to the likes of Game of Thrones, stars of the original Peter Jackson trilogy revealed there was a 'scrapped' a nude hobbit scene.

On The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd, who played Merry and Pippin. When the discussion of the Amazon TV series adaptation began, Colbert referenced that some fans had vocally insisted that there be no nudity in the show. When asked about how they feel about the series leaning more towards a Game of Thrones maturity, Boyd revealed a joke scene had once been written. He said, "Here's the thing, there was almost nudity in the [Lord of the Rings] movies."

Boyd elaborated that the 'scrapped' scene was jokingly written by Philippa Boyens, one of the co-writers for the films' screenplays. He said, "She did a gag, and she wrote a scene -- because we'd been kind of doing some gags and winding people up, having a bit of fun -- and she wrote a scene, that she said, 'Oh, it's a new scene we're filming next week, with the Ents, with Treebeard. So when Merry and Pippin are up Treebeard, he gets a fright and shakes his branches, which makes you guys fall' – and this has all been printed on this script – 'it makes you guys fall, and as you hit all the branches on the way down, by the time you hit the ground, you're naked. And Merry turns to Pippin and says, 'It's cold, isn't it?' And Pippin says, 'Hold me, Merry.'"

The joke scene, which, to be clear, was never intended for filming, managed to fool Boyd. He recounted, "I call up Dom and I said, 'Have you seen this new scene?' And he's like, 'Yeah, yeah I kind of read it.' I was like, 'We're naked!'"

Colbert noted that while fans had petitioned for the series to remain PG during its transition to television, the books by Tolkien had already included some hobbit nudity. He was specifically referring to a scene with the character of Tom Bombadil, who was also cut from the movies. The scene was entirely innocent, as the hobbits simply frolicked on the grass after discarding their wet rags and sunbathing.
