Frodo and Bilbo Baggins, two of the most iconic fantasy characters of all time, are celebrating their birthdays, an event the Lord of the Rings fanbase calls Hobbit Day.As specified in the groundbreaking and beloved The Lord of the Rings trilogy, both Bilbo and Frodo celebrate their birthdays on Sept. 22. As seen in The Fellowship of the Ring, the two attend Bilbo's massive "eleventy first," or 111 year birthday. Bilbo was born in the year 2890 while Frodo's year of birth was 2968, both within the Third Age. To celebrate the event, fans of Tolkien's seminal fantasy series took to social media to wish the characters, and the franchise in general, well.
Both Bilbo and Frodo are arguably the most important and pivotal characters of Tolkien's fantasy epic. In The Hobbit, the One Ring, the most powerful artifact in Middle-Earth, finds Bilbo after escaping the clutches of corrupted creature Gollum. Keeping it with him for decades, the ring begins to exert its influence over Bilbo, who's freed from its clutches by Gandalf the Grey.
In The Lord of the Rings, Frodo inherits the One Ring from Bilbo and is tasked with taking it to the Elves in Rivendale. Once there, Frodo's party learns that they will need to take the ring to Mount Doom if they want to destroy its evil and eliminate the all-powerful Sauron.
While many fell in love with Bilbo, Frodo and the entire Shire through J. R. R. Tolkien's books, Peter Jackson's live-action adaptions introduced a whole new generation to the characters. Bilbo Baggins was played by the late Ian Holm in The Lord of the Rings while Martin Freeman served as the character's younger self in The Hobbit. As for Frodo, Elijah Wood played the character in both movie trilogies.
