His Dark Materials Season 3 has finally offered a first look at the book series' iconic angels.

Entertainment Weekly released the new photos, which show an angel's face, which is largely human-like minus the glistening white eyes, and a full body shot of a glowing, translucent angel. The angels were featured in Philip Pullman's trilogy. James McAvoy, who plays Lord Asriel in His Dark Materials and is also returning for Season 3, went into depth on the depiction of the angels in the show, explaining, "There's a description of them in the books. To see them in their real form is more like looking at architecture than it is looking at a person."

Production on the third and final season of His Dark Materials began in June 2022, announced by HBO with a behind-the-scenes photo of actors Dafne Keen (Lyra) and Amir Wilson (Will). The season is set to be based on the third novel in Pullman's trilogy, The Amber Spyglass.

According to the official logline, Season 3 "will see Will, the bearer of The Subtle Knife, and Lyra, the prophesied child, travel through multiple worlds to find and protect each other."

Season 3 was announced in late 2020 by HBO Programming Executive Vice President Francesca Orsi. Of the new season, Orsi said, "Bringing Phillip Pullman's epic, intricate and culturally resonant body of work to television has been a tremendous privilege."

The main cast of His Dark Materials includes Logan's Dafne Keen as Lyra, The Lone Ranger's Ruth Wilson as Marisa Coulter, Split's James McAvoy as Lord Asriel, The Letter for the King's Amir Wilson as Will Parry, Hamilton's Lin-Manuel Miranda as Lee Scoresby, Will Keen as Father MacPhail, and Shameless' Anne-Marie Duff as Ma Costa.

His Dark Materials is the second adaptation of Philip Pullman's novels, the first of which was Chris Weitz's 2007 film The Golden Compass. The film saw largely negative reactions from audiences, who complained that it left out a lot of material from the book, attempted to sanitize its violent scenes, and evade the book's criticisms of Christianity. The film stars Dakota Blue Richards, Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, Eva Green, Ian McKellen, and Freddie Highmore.

Seasons 1 and 2 of His Dark Materials are available on HBO Max. Season 3 will arrive in December.
