Looking back at Comic-Con International, by the numbers

With Comic-Con International 2014 a few day behind us, everyone has a chance to unpack, rest up and get ready for the next big convention (New York Comic Con is Oct. 9-12, by the way). But before we’re completely finished with San Diego, let’s take a look at some interesting numbers from the big event:

Comic-Con International is by far the largest event on the San Diego Convention Center’s 2014 calendar, with its 130,000 attendees, in the words of The New York Times, “far outstripping the combined total of its next four largest conventions, expected to be about 62,500 people.” According to a convention center report (PDF), this year’s installment was estimated to have a $177.8 million economic impact.

However, The Times notes attendees were expected to spend just $603 each on average, a little more than one-third what was shelled out in April by those in San Diego for the gathering of the American Association for Cancer Research (attendance: 17,000).

Many of those attendees were quick to try to cash in on convention-exclusives, with The Times noting that, as of 3 p.m. Saturday, there were more than 4,000 eBay listings under the heading “Comic-Con 2014.” A ReAction Alien Egg Chamber Playset offered sold at the convention for $100 had a “Buy It Now” price of $250 on eBay.

KFNB reports that during Comic-Con, the convention center used more than 50,000 square feet of tents, more than 20 miles of electrical cable, and 6,000 feet of plastic chains for line control.

• More than 23 tons of trash was picked up during the four days of Comic-Con by the Downtown San Diego Partnership-funded Clean & Safe Team, Fox5 reports, six times more than usual. The group also collected nearly 3,400 aluminum cans (three times more than usual), removed 4,900 stickers, and gathered about 18,600 fliers and posters. There are just 344 days until Comic-Con International 2015, which has been announced for July 9-12 (with Preview Night on July 8).
