Riot Games has confirmed the theft of League of Legends and Teamfight Tactics source codes.

As reported by Video Games Chronicle, a social engineering attack resulted in the robbery of source codes for League of Legends and Teamfight Tactics. Consequently, Riot received an email detailing a ransom, which the studio says it will not pay. Fortunately, Riot assures players that their personal information is not compromised. The source code "can increase the likelihood of new cheats emerging" but also includes a "number of experimental features" as well. "We're committed to transparency and will release a full report in the future detailing the attackers' techniques, the areas where Riot's security controls failed, and the steps we're taking to ensure this doesn't happen again," Riot wrote.

Mageseeker: A League of Legends Story Leaks

In addition to League of Legends' source code, an unannounced spinoff leaked online on Jan. 14. A South Korean video game rating board appeared to reveal Mageseeker: A League of Legends Story. Per the rating board, the title may follow Sylas, a former Mageseeker, as the protagonist on his quest to "save Demacia." Mageseeker will allegedly release on PC and console platforms and have a parental rating for 12-year-olds and older. Mageseeker is Riot's third A League of Legends Story game if the rumors prove true. The studio previously launched Ruined King and Hextech Mayhem in November 2021.

Added as a Champion in 2019, Sylas the Unshackled opposes Demacia's persecution of mages as the leader of the Wolf Team. Following Sylas' hardships due to his magical powers, he became a rogue mage with a vengeance. Akin to another famous game protagonist in Castlevania's Simon Belmont, Sylas utilizes chain whips in battle. Sylas has also starred in a Marvel Comics series alongside fellow Demacian mage Lux.

Riot's Success With Arcane

Apart from video games, the League of Legends universe has expanded into the television industry with Netflix's Arcane. At 2022's Emmys, Arcane became the first video game series to win Outstanding Animated Program at the prestigious ceremony. The adaptation even caught the attention of The Witcher's Henry Cavill, who persuaded his girlfriend to keep binge-watching Arcane late into the night.

In addition to Arcane, Riot Games announced its goal to develop a League of Legends live-action film adaptation. "Riot will eventually dabble in live-action, film and interactive content," Shauna Spenley, Riot Global President of Entertainment, said, "Arcane may be Riot's first major step into entertainment, but the gaming company is just testing the waters of TV and film content for now."

League of Legends is available for free on macOS and PC. Mageseeker: A League of Legends Story does not currently have a release date. Arcane Season 1 is on Netflix.
