In the MCU, Loki has become a fan-favorite thanks to his mischievous adventures, his anti-hero arc which turned him from the epitome of evil to a great hero who fought beside his brother Thor on multiple occasions, and of course the brilliant portrayal by Tom Hiddleston. Loki is of course an incredibly complex character with a very unique, to say the least, personality, and his comic-book counterpart is actually even more complicated.

Seeing as his comic book debut was from all the way back in the 60s, Loki has been through a lot over the past decades. From elaborate plans to take over Midgard to pranks played on his brother Thor, the list of crazy and entertaining Loki stories is almost endless.

10 When Loki Actually Turned His Brother Thor into a Frog

Frog Thor

One of the funniest moments in Taika Waititi's genius revival of the Thor franchise, Thor: Ragnarok, was when Thor told fans about a pretty hilarious prank that was played on him, where Thor transforms into a frog as Loki casually goes off to claim the Asgardian throne for himself in Thor #364-366.

This is a pretty light-hearted example of their brotherly conflicts and thanks to the brilliance of Walt Simonson, the storyline was brought to life fantastically and left every single fan with a massive grin. The prank-filled plan doesn't exactly plan but sets up an epic finale between the Asgardian brothers.

9 Loki Was Already A Massive Villain In The Very First Avengers

Avengers #1 set up success for the premiere superhero team.

Avengers #1 by Jack Kirby, Stan Lee, Dick Ayers, Stan Goldberg, and Sam Rosen was an incredibly ground-breaking comic book, and just like the movies, the Avengers were brought together by the God of Mischief Loki himself, although some things played out a little differently.

Unlike Avengers, 2012, Loki didn't orchestrate an alien invasion on New York City, instead, he planned to pit the Avengers against each other by framing Hulk for a train crash. Of course, his real intentions were later found out by the Avengers and leads to some of the most epic fight scenes in Marvel comics history with Hulk turning into an elephant-juggling clown and Thor getting destroyed by multiple Lokis.

8 Loki: Agent Of Asgard Was An Extremely Fun Twist On The Character

This genius twist on Loki, written by Al Ewing, saw a younger version of the character who had a change of heart as he attempted to do some good with his powers. He makes a deal with the All-Mother to become a so-called Agent of Asgard, where each problem he solves, one of his previous sins is erased.

This leads Loki on a quest through his past to right his wrongs in the super-fun series which blends the usual Norse mythology with action-packed espionage, something that seems similar to the upcoming Loki series on Disney+, where he will also be acting as a secret agent, but with the Time Variance Authority instead.

7 Vote Loki Was Another Great Take On The Character, Where This Time He Becomes President

Vote Loki

One of the coolest comic book easter eggs from the latest Loki trailer was the portrayal of President Loki as one of the many Loki's we can expect to see in the new series. This of course has been pulled straight from the Vote Loki series from Christopher Hastings, Langdon Foss, and Chris Chuckry.

His political stint where he embarked on a campaign to become President of the United States was an unexpected turn for the character. While short-lived, he has become a very popular comic series amongst fans, especially thanks to the amazing artwork Langdon Foss.

6 Thor & Loki Blood Brothers Was An Epic Miniseries

Loki sits on his throne

For as long as any fan can remember, Loki's only aim in both the comics and the movies, was to claim the throne of Asgard and have all that power, but what happens if he actually completes his mission? Does he watch plays of himself as he sacrifices his life for Thor, like in Thor: Ragnarok?

Rob Rodi and Esad Ribic, answered that question in Blood Brothers in a very dense and emotional comic series that delves right into Loki's mind and the difficulties he must face upon taking control of an entire realm. Not to mention that Hela also features, which is always pretty fun.

5 Who Knew That Thor and Kid Loki Teaming Up Would Be So Awesome

Kieron Gillen, Doug Braithwaite, Ulises Arreola, and Clayton Cowles delivered an epic tale that saw the entirety of Asgard threatened by the looming threat of the God of Fear in Journey Into Mystery: Fear Itself. In fact, the threat is so big that only Loki can help stop, but the problem was that Thor's version of Loki was no longer there, and he then had to turn to Kid Loki, a sulky teen with his Stark phone on hand at all times.

The storyline was on the mega-scale in terms of threat and lived up to the hype with the awesome action sequences. What made it one of the best storylines was the complexity of Kid Loki, where neither Thor nor fans knew if they could trust him, even though he was the only hope.

4 Another Kid Loki Storyline Is Among Fan's Favorites

Kid Loki in Marvel Comics

Kid Loki was so popular some fans questioned whether they even preferred him to the original Loki, so when he set up the Young Avengers, fans couldn't be more excited. Style > Substance by Kieron Gillen and Jaimie McKelvie saw Loki's introduction to the Young Avengers roster, but along with him of course came his looming past and the still prominent question of whether he can truly be trusted.

Full of teenage angst, Loki causes lots of problems to the team as his past comes to the full front of their adventures, but is an incredibly enjoying read and reaffirms fans' love for the new incarnation of the beloved character.

3 The Surtur Saga Shed A New Light On The God Of Mischief

Surtur Saga

While he has had plenty of problems with his brother Thor and his father Odin when Surtur came to threaten all of Asgard, Loki stepped in to defend his homeland in a massively unexpected twist. However, the fight is of course not an easy one, as Surtur comes to battle headfirst causing a lot of damage along the way.

The series even featured the heart-breaking death of Odin during the finale. But, even though he decided to help his family, Loki couldn't help but prioritize himself as Odin exclaims "For Asgard!", Thor shouts "For Midgard!", and Loki yells "For myself!" in somewhat typical Loki fashion.

2 The Avengers Were Pitted Against The Defenders Thanks To Loki

Avengers and Defenders

Of course one of the biggest tricks Loki has up his sleeve is the ability to manipulate others, and he does exactly that when he pitted two of the biggest superhero teams in the Marvel comics, the Avengers and the Defenders against each other. In fact, in Avengers #118, Loki even teams up with one of Dr. Strange's biggest foes Dormammu to complete this goal.

The two big baddies used their cunning brains and mastermind tactics to create a clash between the two groups that would never be forgotten. Not only was it full of awesome Dark Dimension scenes, which Dormammu is helping unleash into Earth-616, but the storyline once again showed off Loki's immense manipulation abilities, and him once again targeting the Avengers.

1 The Trial Of Loki Was Yet Another Game-Changing Series

Balder from Trials of Loki

Not often is it that comic books and movies in the superhero genre are based from the point of view of the main antagonist, but Loki's perspective was finally revealed in The Trials of Loki series by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. This series showed Loki at a young age, who was actually well-liked by most Asgardians thanks to his humor that seemed to make them all laugh.

Things dramatically shifted after he killed for the first time, and this is where the hatred of Loki by the majority of Asgardians began, and Loki's downfall to the dark side began. It's an interesting story given that it's told from his point of view and manages to shed some light on Loki's childhood and motivations for his evil acts.
