WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Loki Episode 5, "Journey Into Mystery," streaming now on Disney+.

As the Disney+ series gears up for its hotly-anticipated season finale, Loki fans are trying desperately to stay one step ahead of the twists and turns the show doubtless has in store. Theories run rampant about various mysteries created and teased in the previous five episodes, but at the end of the day, that might not be what fans truly care most about. One TikToker points out that the conclusion to the grander plot ultimately doesn't matter as long as one crucial plot point is tied up: Mobius better get to ride a jet ski.

The series hit the ground running with ambitious world-building. On the heels of Avengers: Endgame first introducing time-travel, Loki explored the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse with gusto as it created a sprawling mystery involving the Time Variance Authority, the various Loki variants wreaking mischief throughout reality and the series' ultimate connection to future Marvel properties. As doggedly as fans try to work their way through those mysteries and anticipate the conclusion of the series before it arrives, the grander plot proves to be small potatoes compared to satisfying a single character's wish to ride a jet ski.

As silly as it sounds, the character detail for Mobius proves to be a sweet and touching part of his motivation that tugs on viewers' heart strings. Introduced as a dutiful but weary employee of the TVA, Mobius idly flips through magazines dreaming about one day riding a jet ski. Believing his entire existence is dedicated to his work, Mobius treats the wish as a simple fantasy until he discovers that he is actually a variant and that the TVA has been lying to him. He betrays the organization and allies himself with Loki, all because the possibility of one day riding a jet ski is more real to him than it ever was before, and the character is so darned charming that thousands of hearts will break if Loki ends before he gets a chance to fulfill his dream.

The comparison between the emotional investment in Mobius' character arc and that of the series overall help to put into perspective the priorities of fans who seemingly care about nothing more than crafting theories and laying out the larger MCU mythology. While such mystery and intrigue doubtless hooks in viewers and serves as the driving force behind much of the content covering the series, ultimately it's the characters that make any of that matter. For instance, fans went bonkers trying to predict how Agatha Harkness or Mephisto played a part in the events of WandaVision, but by the end of it, the emotional journey of the central characters was more important than anything else.

Loki is much the same way, and particularly given the central character's devious nature, Mobius is the real heart and soul of the show. Loki himself grew a heart in learning to see beyond himself and developing his romance with Sylvie, but his friendship with Mobius gave him the template for establishing such a relationship in the first place. In a lot of ways, the discontent Mobius shows even before he discovers the truth of his origins is aroused by his jet ski-centric desires, and it would be almost cruel for the show to set up that expectation without ever satisfying its conclusion.

The human element will always matter the most, and the importance of Mobius' relatively miniscule character arc is a perfect example of that. No mystery is intriguing or plot worth resolving unless the audience can experience the story on a more intimate level, drawn in by the aspects of themselves they see in the characters.

Mobius tending to his tedious work while fantasizing about such a simple pleasure is something anybody can relate to. The multiverse can crumble, the mastermind can be Kang or King Loki or Agatha all along and apocalypse can loom in the horizon. But as long as Mobius gets that jet ski ride, it will still be a happy ending.

Loki stars Tom Hiddleston, Owen Wilson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Wunmi Mosaku, Sophia Di Martino, Richard E. Grant, Sasha Lane, and Eugene Cordero. New episodes air Wednesdays on Disney+.
