Loki star Tom Hiddleston has revealed that he's always been conscious of the God of Mischief's queer identity.

"I have always been aware of it," Hiddleston said to Vanity Fair on this facet of Loki. "I see it as my responsibility as somebody who is able to portray this character, at this time, that I honor the aspects of the character which are there in the canon."

"It was important to [series director] Kate [Herron] and important to Michael [Waldron]," Hiddleston continued. "The whole point of Loki is that Loki is a trickster, and crosses boundaries and can represent many different shapes. I was really pleased that we got to touch on that in this series."

The concept of Loki having a fluid approach to sexuality and gender has been explored in Marvel properties before, such as the comic series Loki: Agent of Asgard. However, it has not been explicitly explored in the Marvel Cinematic Universe prior to Loki. This development was officially confirmed through a promo for Loki, which revealed that the God of Mischief is gender-fluid.

This is a significant development for the MCU, which has not featured an openly queer major protagonist up to this point. Upcoming projects in this franchise like Eternals and Thor: Love and Thunder will also reportedly feature superheroes belonging to the LGBTQIA+ community.

Loki stars Tom Hiddleston, Owen Wilson, Sophia Di Martino, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Richard E. Grant. New episodes of the show air on Disney+.
