Marvel Cinematic Universe star Gugu Mbatha-Raw -- who portrays Ravonna Renslayer on Loki -- says the Disney+ series' upcoming second season will be "bigger, bolder" and "more surreal" than the first.

During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Mbatha-Raw discussed her roles as Ravonna and Sophie on Disney+'s Loki and Apple TV+'s Surface, respectively. "I'm really grateful to be at a stage in my career, where [with] these shows, I have a sense of ownership over these characters and you get to go deeper into those worlds," she said.

Regarding the Disney+ series in particular, Mbatha-Raw added, "It's been amazing to shoot the second season of Loki." She went on to say that fans of Loki "are gonna be in for a real treat because the show is bolder and more surreal. And in many ways, goes to some bigger, bolder places than season 1, which is really exciting." "In Loki, Ravonna is a powerful presence," she continued, reaffirming that, in Season 2, "selfishly, Renslayer makes it out of the TVA, which I'm really excited about."

Loki Returns for Season 2 in 2023

Loki premiered its first season on Disney+ in June 2021 as part of Phase Four of the MCU. The series picks up after the events of the 2019 film Avengers: Endgame, in which an alternate version of Loki (Tom Hiddleston) -- separate from the one killed by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War -- creates a new timeline after successfully stealing the Tesseract in 2012. In doing so, the God of Mischief draws the ire of the Time Variance Authority (TVA), an organization that eliminates multiversal variants with the goal of preserving the "Sacred Timeline."

Season 1 concluded with some major revelations, such as the fact that the TVA was secretly controlled by He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors), a multiversal variant of Kang the Conqueror. Additionally, Ravonna -- the judge of the TVA -- discovered that she was herself a variant, setting her on a quest for free will. Moreover, Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) ultimately killed He Who Remains, thus opening the floodgates of the multiverse.

The end credits of the Loki Season 1 finale in July 2021 confirmed that the MCU series had been renewed for a second season at Disney+. Then, at San Diego Comic-Con 2022, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige announced that Loki Season 2 was slated to premiere in the summer of 2023 as part of Phase Five.

However, Marvel fans may also see the TVA's influence emerge elsewhere. If recent reports are to be believed, Loki star Owen Wilson is attached to reprise his role as Mobius M. Mobius in Marvel Studios' Deadpool 3, which is currently slated for release on Nov. 8, 2024 to kick off Phase Six of the MCU. Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds recently added fuel to these rumors by engaging in a Twitter exchange with a fan account ostensibly belonging to Miss Minutes, the TVA's mascot from Loki.

Marvel Studios' Loki Season 1 is currently streaming on Disney+. Season 2 is slated to premiere in the summer of 2023.
