With an incredibly well-received season in the books and another highly anticipated one on the way, Loki has easily become the fan-favorite MCU series, thus far. While the finale of Season 1 answered a lot of questions that had been asked in earlier episodes, it generated plenty more in the process.

Many of these questions will likely be answered next season or perhaps in an upcoming film. However, some of these questions are specifically for He Who Remains and it could be quite some time before fans see him again. While his introduction was superb, He Who Remains still has quite a bit of explaining to do before he steps into the next Big Bad role.

10 What Is His Name?

Jonathan Majors as He Who Remains on Loki

While most fans would bet money that He Who Remains is actually the first introduction of Kang in the MCU, the fact that his name is never mentioned is infuriating. He tells Loki and Sylvie that he goes by many names and rattles a few off, but neither Kang nor Nathaniel Richards was mentioned.

With hints like the destroyed Qeng Enterprises building in the Void and confirmation that he is from the 31st century, all clues point to Kang. Though until Marvel decides to formally name this villain, fans will remain in the dark. He is almost certainly Kang, but given the way the MCU adjusts comic storylines, he may not be Nathaniel Richards.

9 How Does He Render Magic Useless At The TVA?

Jonathan Majors and the Time Keepers on Loki

Many fans were quick to assume that magic was prevented from being used in the TVA because of the rune-like symbols etched around the Time Keeper's chamber. However, this has yet to be confirmed by Marvel.

Additionally, considering He Who Remains appears to be just a normal human with no extraordinary powers, how would he even know how to cast them? If runes aren't the answer, does magic just stop working outside of time and space, or did He Who Remains develop a more sinister method?

8 Does That Method Incorporate Dampening The Infinity Stones?

Infinity Stones In Loki

When fans saw a drawer full of inert Infinity Stones, they were incredibly alarmed by the power of the TVA. While they share some characteristics, magic and cosmic energy are quite different, so it's reasonable to assume something else is suppressing the Stones.

One explanation could be that all magical, cosmic, or imbued things are rendered useless at the TVA, i.e. outside of space and time. There is also comic book precedence that suggests the Infinity Stones only work in the universe they were forged in. However, this would essentially contradict the entire plot of Endgame, so it still remains to be seen.

7 Was The Void Established With Alioth? (& How Did He Domesticate Alioth & Harness Its Power?)

Alioth of the Void in Loki

He Who Remains explains that as he was discovering the multiverse, his Variants were as well. Eventually, the stable relationships between the universes devolved into an all-out war with each timeline fighting for survival or supremacy. He Who Remains also reveals that Alioth was born in the chaos of the multiversal war, destroying all that enters the Void.

It's unknown if the Void was a result of the war as well or if it had always been, and was simply discovered by the Conqueror. The Jerk also tells Loki and Sylvie that he weaponized Alioth against his Variants to set the timeline straight, but never explains how. Loki and Sylvie needed to perform absurd levels of enchantment to subdue Alioth, so it's unknown how a simple man from the future was about to tame the temporal beast.

6 How Did He Invent All Of The TVA's Temporal Devices?

Loki & B-15 about to meet Sylvie

During He Who Remains' explanation to Loki and Sylvie, fans can see a visual of the story being told by the changing silvery mass from his TemPad. If one watches carefully, they can see versions of the pruning/super slow-mo batons, TemPads, and even reset charges.

This indicates that He Who Remains and/or his many selves developed all of the gadgetry found at the TVA. While he is from the future, the technology showcased at the TVA is far more advanced than just future technology. Somehow, the Jerk was able to develop multiple temporal weapons and tools due to his discovery of the multiverse; and obviously, fans want to see how he did it.

5 What's The Whole Deal With The Variants Running The TVA?

Hunter B-15 and Mobius from Loki

On Lamentis-1, Sylvie reveals to Loki that all of the employees at the TVA are actually Variants with new identities, new memories, and what seems like the ability to live forever. However, it's never revealed why He Who Remains uses Variants as his workforce, especially when he can clearly craft somewhat sophisticated androids.

Additionally, how is it decided which Variants are pruned and which ones are allowed to work for the TVA? How exactly does he suppress their memories, and if they are all working toward the same cause, why create division among the ranks? How is it determined who gets promoted and what happens to Variants that make it to the top, is there retirement at the end or just pruning?

4 Where Is The TVA Actually Located? (& Why Is It So Old School?)

Loki and Mobius at the TVA in Loki Episode 1

No one knows where in the vast expanse of space-time the TVA is located, though Mobius has suggested that time works differently at the TVA and Renslayer indicates that she and Mobius had been friends for eons before the betrayals. Many fans have theorized that the Quantum Realm city, briefly shown in Ant-Man and The Wasp, could be the location of the TVA.

Additionally, why is the TVA stuck in the 1970s? With such incredible futuristic technology and supreme power over magical and cosmic things, it's unbelievable that He Who Remains would choose to operate the TVA in such an old-school era.

3 Which Variables Factor Into What Determines The Events That Require Pruning?

The branched timelines created after Sylvie kills He Who Remains

While it's fairly obvious that whichever timelines lead to malevolent versions of He Who Remains must be pruned to prevent multiversal war, it's unknown how it's determined which small Nexus Events will result in a Kang. The TVA has a system that notifies them of branches and calculates how quickly they approach the critical point.

This mystery system somehow determines which events will result in Kangs and/or the rate at which branched timelines expand and collide with other timelines. While fans got some answers in Season 1, many of the mysteries of the TVA remain for Season 2.

2 Why Not Choose A More Appropriate Successor, Like The Sorcerer Supreme?

Loki at the TVA superimposed over Dr. Strange

During He Who Remains' long explanation at the end of time, he tells Loki and Sylvie that they are the ones who should take over his role as the head of the TVA. Though considering he pruned so many Lokis over the years, it's a fair assumption he didn't know which Loki would prevail until they showed up.

However, why wouldn't He Who Remains select a successor that had experience with time? Both Dr. Strange and The Ancient One had experience with the Time Stone, so why not choose a Sorcerer Supreme to run the TVA since they are familiar with the complexities of time and space? Additionally, what was he setting in motion with Ravonna? What information did he provide her with, where is she going, and what exactly is her mission?

1 What's The Threshold & Why Didn't He Know What Would Happen After It?

He Who Remains surrendering his TemPad

He Who Remains indicates that he knows everything that will happen, has happened, and will ever happen... at least up until a certain point, after which he becomes just as in the dark about the future as everyone else. He even seems excited to finally not know what is going to happen when that moment finally comes.

He refers to it as the Threshold, but doesn't really explain why this point exists or why he can no longer see the events past it despite still being alive for several minutes after. Additionally, the "Sacred" Timeline begins to branch off after they pass the Threshold, and some have suggested that this was the point at which the TVA changed into the unfamiliar place Loki finds himself in after his fight with Sylvie.
