It’s already been quite a few years since Thor became unworthy of wielding Mjlonir. However, the mighty hammer wasn’t left alone on the Moon for long — soon, Jane Foster would wield the hammer, becoming the newest Thor. But the Odinson, left without a title or a hammer, wouldn’t take this lying down.

After turning down Beta Ray Bill’s Stormbreaker and going on a hunt to find the Mjolnir from another universe, Thor would wage battle with his trusty axe, Jarnbjorn at his side. Next, Thor helped Jane Foster defeat the Mangog in a confrontation that ended with the destruction of Mjolnir in the heart of the sun. Thor is now once again ready to assume his mantle in Jason Aaron and Mike Del Mundo’s new Thor series as a part of Marvel's Fresh Start initiative.

The only problem is Thor has no signature weapon to call his own. Thanks to the help of Nidavellir’s Dwarf smiths, Thor has a veritable arsenal of Asgardian weapons at his beck and call — but none who come close to Mjolnir. After using quite a few trick hammers already, Thor’s latest weapon is a double-edged axe that works as a hammer as well.

While we expected this weapon to last as long as Thor’s previous hammers did, a preview of this week's Thor #4 appears to show this one sticking around. Why? Because it was just christened by Loki with the most perfect name ever: Hel-Bringer.

Loki Thor hammer Hel-Bringer

Currently, both Thor and Loki are waging war in Hel. However, in a bid to get reinforcements, Thor was secretly sent to Valhalla to recruit the Valkyries to his cause. Then, in a rather epic scene, Loki ties the axe to a chain of his own making and sends it across realms, directly to Thor.

As he throws the hammer from Hel to Valhalla, that is the exact moment the God of Mischief comes up with the name Hel-Bringer. The name is quite fitting, given that its purpose is meant to summon Thor, who will unleash his and the Valkyries' might upon Sindr and her minions.

There’s no telling if Hel-Bringer is a weapon that will become as iconic as Mjolnir or Stormbreaker, but it’s off to a stupendous start. Forged by the dwarves and christened in the fires of battle, we might have witnessed the official debut of the newest element of the Thor mythos.
