WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the fourth episode of Loki, "The Nexus Event," streaming now on Disney+.

Although it seemed the fourth episode of Marvel's Loki was packed with more surprises than its 42-minute runtime could contain -- an uprising within the Time Variance Authority, a revelation about the Time-Keepers, the apparent pruning of Loki himself -- a mid-credits scene crammed in one more. Or, rather, four more: the introduction of additional variants, including the long-awaited debut of Kid Loki.

In "The Nexus Event," we're provided insight into the tragic backstory of Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) as she and Loki (Tom Hiddleston) are rescued from the apocalypse on Lamentis by the TVA, only to seemingly face another kind of doom. However, the revelation by the two that the TVA agents aren't the creations of the Time-Keepers, but instead kidnapped variants sows dissent, resulting in a confrontation that seemingly ends with the pruning of Loki by Ravonna Renslayer (Gugu Mbatha-Raw).

However, in the series' first mid-credits scene, the Marvel Cinematic Universe's superior trickster awakes in the post-apocalyptic New York City glimpsed in the trailers. "Am I dead?" a shocked Loki asks to no one in particular, only to be met with an almost Terminator-like response: "Not yet. But you will be unless you come with us."

Boastful Loki (Deobia Oparei), Kid Loki (Jack Veal), Classic Loki (Richard E. Grant) and Crocodile Loki in the mid-credits scene of Loki Episode 4

He, and the audience, is then confronted by four Loki variants: Richard E. Grant, who spoke the warning, credited as Classic Loki; Jack Veal as Kid Loki; DeObia Oparei as Boastful Loki; and what we can presume from his little gold crown is Crocodile Loki.

The casting of Grant, known for his roles in The Age of Innocence, Logan and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, was announced in September, igniting speculation that he would play "Old Loki," and, quite possibly, the show's true villain. He's certainly older Loki, wearing the instantly recognizable gold-and-green Marvel Comics costume designed by his co-creator, Jack Kirby.

Long-swirling rumors that Veal (The End of the F***ing World, Tin Star) was cast as the fan-favorite Kid Loki are indeed proven true with this briefest of scenes. Introduced in 2010 by writer Matt Fraction and artist Pasqual Ferry in Thor #617, he was a reborn version of the older Loki, only without some of the baggage.

Boastful Loki, portrayed by Oparei (Game of Thrones, Sex Education) is a bit of a wild card -- although certainly not as wild as Crocodile Loki. We might presume, because of his name and battle hammer, that he's a variant who's a bit closer to Thor, at least in temperament. This could be a clever nod to Hiddleston originally auditioning for the title role in Marvel's Thor. That's only speculation, however.

As for Crocodile Loki ... Well, there was a Frog Thor in Marvel Comics, so why not?

Created by Michael Waldron and directed by Kate Herron, Loki stars Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Owen Wilson as Mobius M. Mobius, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Ravonna Renslayer, Wunmi Mosaku as Hunter B-15, Tara Strong as Miss Minutes, Eugene Cordero as Casey, Sasha Lane as Hunter C-20 and Sophia Di Martino as Sylvie, with Richard E. Grant and Jack Veal. New episodes premiere Wednesdays on Disney+.
