The recent trailer for the Loki Disney+ series has launched almost as many theories as there are Lokis throughout the Marvel multiverse. A mysterious woman shown in a brief scene is the subject of many of the theories. The blonde figure appears roughly two minutes into the official trailer, framed in the center of a purpling, apocalyptic sky. Fans are desperately hoping this mystery woman is Black Widow. However, she could be a different character yet to be introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Lady Loki.

In the comics, Lady Loki was originally one of classic Loki's stunts. Having died during Ragnarok, Loki arranges his own reincarnation in Thor #5, Vol 3, written by J. Michael Straczynski and illustrated by Oliver Coipel and Marko Djurdjevic. He takes Lady Sif's form to do it at first, though he quietly retained access to his other forms. Lady Loki became a frequent tool in his arsenal, cozying up to Doom and further using his shapeshifting tricks to replace Wanda Maximoff. It's an iteration that still shows up in spinoffs and multiverse events.

Later, Loki dies (again) during the Siege event, written by Brian Michael Bendis and illustrated Oliver Coipel. That paved the way for the version of Loki that's been showing up since. Introduced by author Matt Fraction and illustrator Pasqual Ferry in Thor #617, writer Kieron Gillen went on to popularize the character in other comics like never before. This childish Loki grew up fast over the course of Young Avengers, and as they reached their teen years and beyond, they became comfortable with the inherent gender fluidity of their identity. While "classic" Loki treated turning into a woman as a trick to be used, the new modern Loki is simply both — and much more.

In comics continuity, it's actually this genderfluid Loki behind the Vote Loki miniseries. But it seems like the TVA is dealing with Lokis that have gone out of control, and there's going to be more than one iteration of Loki running around to be dealt with.

Lady Loki

Additionally, there's some casting evidence that might prove Lady Loki will appear. Actress Sophia Di Martino was seemingly cast in the series, but her role hasn't been specified. While her involvement wasn't confirmed on Investor Day, her official social media ties her to Loki, and she was seen on set in early unofficial set photos. Certain costumes at the time appeared like they could be Lady Loki's, and many have since speculated that Di Martino is playing her.

Loki stars Tom Hiddleston, Owen Wilson, Sophia Di Martino, Sasha Lane, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Richard E. Grant. The series arrives on Disney+ in May 2021.
