WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Loki Episode 5, "Journey Into Mystery," streaming now on Disney+.

The latest episode of Loki, “Journey Into Mystery” features Tom Hiddleston’s God of Mischief stuck in a wasteland at the “end of time,” hiding away with alternative versions of Loki as the menacing storm Alioth consumes the ruins. But in addition to more Lokis, this multiversal dumping ground also contains plenty of Easter Eggs, including a quick appearance of Ant-Man’s villain Yellowjacket.

When Loki pans over the barren surface scattered with ruins, there is a brief glimpse in the corner of a massive helmet, lying near the hill housing the Lokis’ underground bunker. Closer inspection reveals it to be the helmet of Darren Cross’ Yellowjacket suit from 2015’s Ant-Man, albeit severely rusted.

Yellowjacket Helmet Loki MCU

Darren Cross, portrayed by Corey Stoll, was a protégé of Hank Pym who usurped his former mentor when he was refused access to the Pym Particles research. Cross’ greed and instability were only exacerbated by the Pym Particles affecting his brain chemistry. He developed his own weaponized version of the Ant-Man suit, the Yellowjacket suit, which he planned to sell onto HYDRA. Pym, his daughter Hope, and his Ant-Man successor Scott Lang managed to steal and destroy Cross’ Yellowjacket research, enraging Cross to don the Yellowjacket suit himself and fight the new Ant-Man, which resulted in him and the suit imploding in on themselves.

This discarded Yellowjacket helmet in the Void likely originates from an alternative timeline where Cross (or at least his technology) survived. The Loki variants featured in “Journey Into Mystery” are also “villains” who succeeded when they were meant to fail, such as Kid Loki explaining his Nexus Event was killing Thor. This Yellowjacket variant also managed to “grow” himself, while in the first Ant-Man, he and Ant-Man could only shrink. Scott Lang only managed to grow in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, after significant time training with Hank in a lab.

Alongside being a nod to the MCU villain, Yellowjacket’s giant helmet may also reference the iconic Old Man Logan by Mark Millar, Steve McNiven, Dexter Vines and Morry Hollowell. The post-apocalyptic comic also portrayed an alternative timeline, with a retired Wolverine trying to settle down amongst a world conquered by supervillains. In order to save his new family, Logan accepts a final delivery job from a blind Hawkeye, taking a road trip across this dystopian America. One of the landmarks they visit is “Pym Cross,” named after the enormous skeleton of Hank Pym. And to add fuel to this theory, Old Man Logan also features Loki as a giant skeleton, crushed beneath the Baxter Building.

Yellowjacket’s helmet in Loki is less gruesome than these two skeletons, but they share the similar evocative of fallen monuments, such as ruins in Percy Bysshe Shelley’s Ozymandias. Although the original Yellowjacket was presumably destroyed, this wasteland demonstrates there were other versions of him running around, even if he could not survive as long as the Lokis.

Created by Michael Waldron and directed by Kate Herron, Loki stars Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Owen Wilson as Mobius M. Mobius, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Ravonna Renslayer, Wunmi Mosaku as Hunter B-15, Tara Strong as Miss Minutes, Eugene Cordero as Casey, Sasha Lane as Hunter C-20 and Sophia Di Martino as Sylvie, with Richard E. Grant and Jack Veal. New episodes premiere Wednesdays on Disney+.
