Showrunner Michael Waldron has described Marvel Studios' upcoming Disney+ series Loki as a science fiction show."We have a landing page on [Disney+]! And an old trailer," Waldron shared in an Instagram story. "But I like the green nebula. It indicates that this is a science fiction ('sci-fi') show. You know what they say about 'sci-fi': Expect the unexpected when it comes to science fiction."

Though the Thor franchise started out as primarily a fantasy series, the 2017 entry Thor: Ragnarok planted the films firmly in the world of science fiction storytelling. That said, confirmation of Loki being a sci-fi show also matches up with the few plot details that are known about the series, most notably that it will be a time-travel adventure that involves the Time Variance Authority.

While little else is known about Loki, Waldron did previously confirm it would involve the God of Mischief having a personal crisis related to his identity.

In Marvel Studios' 'Loki,' the mercurial villain Loki (Tom Hiddleston) resumes his role as the God of Mischief in a new series that takes place after the events of 'Avengers: Endgame.' Kate Herron directs and Michael Waldron is head writer. Debuts on Disney+ next year—2021.

Marvel Studios' Loki stars Tom Hiddleston, Owen Wilson, Sophia Di Martino and Gugu Mbatha-Raw. The series arrives on Disney+ in 2021.
