The project has been a long time in the making. In October 2011, the new adaptation of William F. Nolan’s 1967 novel had screenwriter Andrew Baldwin come on board. Before Refn, Gosling and Baldwin were involved, directors like Bryan Singer, James McTiegue and Carl Erik Rinsch and writers Alex Garland and Will Beall had all taken a stab at the movie.
Now Variety is reporting that Gosling is no longer attached to star in the film, which is a pretty big hit. We had been anticipating a Drive reunion from the duo after they made their second collaboration, Only God Forgives, but it seems as though something has drawn Gosling away from the project. That thing could be Gosling’s upcoming directorial debut How to Catch a Monster, which is set to start filming next year with Christina Hendricks in the lead role.
