At the top of many a fan's wishlist is for Hugh Jackman's Wolverine to cross paths on the big screen with Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool -- the real Deadpool, that is, not the mouthless version Reynolds portrayed in 2009's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." Well, that may happen sooner than expected... or it may not.According to The Wrap, that scenario will take place in "Logan," slated to be the final film starring Jackman as the iconic Canadian mutant. The report, which comes from "an individual with knowledge of the project," says the interaction is a post-credits sequence, not part of the film's larger narrative.RELATED: Hugh Jackman Took A Pay Cut So Logan Could Get An R RatingSince initial report surfaced, however, Reynolds has taken to Twitter to debunk it. Either that or, as fans are surely hoping is the case, to cast enough doubt on things to make any eventual cameo or appearance more of a surprise.

"Logan" director and writer James Mangold concurred, going on step fourth to label the report "fake news."

Jackman and Reynolds have been trading playful insults via social media since the latter first began promoting his 2016 surprise hit, "Deadpool." The banter has escalated in recent months from teases that their character could face each other on the big screen to outright statements from Reynolds that he legitimately wants to see a Deadpool/Wolverine movie.

“I want Deapdool and Wolverine in a movie together,” Reynolds said in early December. “What we’re gonna have to do is convince Hugh. If anything, I’m going to need to do what I can to get my internet friends back on board to help rally another cause down the line.”

Set years after the epilogue of “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” “Logan” centers on the efforts of Wolverine and Charles Xavier to protect a young girl named Laura, who has been confirmed as the Marvel Comics character X-23.

Opening March 3, 2017, “Logan” also stars Patrick Stewart, Richard E. Grant, Boyd Holbrook, Stephen Merchant and Dafne Keen.
