More and more information about the upcoming Wolverine film "Logan" has been revealed in the last week, and now a new set pic from the film's Instagram account -- codename: wponx -- teases one of the film's villains. The image is of actor Boyd Holbrook and the caption simply reads "Pierce." That's a pretty clear sign that Holbrook is playing longstanding X-Foe Donald Pierce.
Donald Pierce has a lengthy history with the X-Men and Wolverine, specifically. Created by Chris Claremont and John Byrne, Donald Pierce originally debuted in 1980's "X-Men" #132 as a member of the Inner Circle of the Hellfire Club. Unlike the other members of the villain group, Pierce was a cyborg with anti-mutant prejudice. Wolverine's claws cut up Pierce's robotic limbs during the X-Men's battle with the Inner Circle, causing Pierce to flee. Pierce was soon kicked out of the club for plotting against them.
But Pierce's role wasn't over just yet; he rescued a few Hellfire Club guards that Wolverine had also sliced his way through and turned them into cyborgs. He hooked up with a few more cybrog mercenaries and led the villain team known as the Reavers, a group that caused plenty of problems for Wolverine and the X-Men during their late '80s stay in the Australian Outback. Pierce has returned to menace the X-Men and Wolverine time and time again over the last few years, with his anti-mutant beliefs and cyborg strength growing each time.
So far, this photo and caption are the closet confirmation we have that Donald Pierce is in the film. Much remains a mystery about the film's plot, although we do know that Mister Sinister will most likely play a part in the film based on comments made by "X-Men" director Bryan Singer.
Directed by James Mangold and starring Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Boyd Holbrook, Richard E. Grant and Stephen Merchant, “Logan” arrives in theaters on March 3, 2017.
