After thanking fans on Sunday for his “17 awesome years” as Wolverine, this morning Hugh Jackman turned his attention to “Logan” co-star Patrick Stewart.
Tweeting a candid photo of the two actors on the set of director James Mangold’s film, Jackman wrote, “It has been a great honor to work beside you @SirPatStew. So, what’s next?! Love HJ.”

“Logan,” which earned $237.8 million worldwide in its opening weekend, marks a farewell to the franchise for both Jackman and Stewart, who originated their roles as Wolverine and Charles Xavier in 2000’s “X-Men.” They’ve appeared together in seven installment of the Fox series, including “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” and “The Wolverine.”
On Friday, as “Logan” debuted in theaters across the globe, Stewart delivered his own message to Jackman and Mangold, tweeting, “The final time and maybe our best time. Thank you @Mang0ld and @RealHughJackman.”

Although Stewart had earlier said he wasn’t quite ready to say goodbye to the role of Professor X, he changed his mind last month after watching “Logan” with Jackman and Mangold in Berlin. “[A]s I sat there I realized there will never be a better, a more perfect, a more sensitive, emotional, and beautiful way of saying au revoir to Charles Xavier than this movie,” he recalled. “So, I told [Hugh] that same evening, ‘I’m done too. It’s all over.’”
Jackman, on the other hand, has known for a while that it’s time to hang up the claws. “I’m really, really proud of this movie,” the actor said in January. “I was really keen that I didn’t leave the party feeling like I could dance more. I think I’m pretty much danced out, and I had a great time. It’s been an unbelievable ride, but it feels right.”
“Logan” is set in the near future, years after the epilogue of 2014’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past.” In it, a weary Logan, whose healing factor is failing, cares for an ailing Professor X in a hideout on the Mexican border. But Logan’s attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are up-ended when a young mutant arrives, pursued by dark forces.
In theaters nationwide, “Logan” stars Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Boyd Holbrook, Richard E. Grant, Dafne Keen and Stephen Merchant.
