Logan, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Earn Oscar Nominations

logan 2017

In a field dominated by Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water, Logan and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 both received nominations this morning for the 90th Academy Awards.

Hugh Jackman's final appearance as Wolverine after 17 years, director James Mangold's Logan fueled early Oscar buzz upon its release in March. In the end, it earned a nomination for best adapted screenplay. Director James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy sequel received a nod for visual effects, facing competition from Blade Runner 2049, Kong: Skull Island, Star Wars: The Last Jedi and War for the Planet of the Apes.

Director Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman, which earlier this month seemed like a potential contender, didn't receive any nominations.

Del Toro's fantasy drama The Shape of Water continued its awards season streak with a field-leading 13 nominations, including for best picture, director, original screenplay, lead actress (Sally Hawkins), and supporting roles (Octavia Spencer and Richard Jenkins). Call Me By Your Name, Dunkirk, Lady Bird and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, were also well represented among the nominees.

Among the pleasant surprises from this morning's announcements was the recognition for Jordan Peele's horror film Get Out, which received nominations for best picture, director, lead actor (Daniel Kaluuya) and screenplay.

The winners will be presented March 4 in a ceremony hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and broadcast live on ABC.
